Production

In 1999, Doris Kearns Goodwin talks about his project Team of Rivals to Steven Spielberg , who wishes to immediately purchase the rights 9 .

Once purchased rights, the project has been continuously postponed since 2005, because of the many projects of the director 10 . Filming was scheduled for early 2011, with Steven Spielberg focusing on his feature films The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn and War Horse , released in 2011 .

Long heralded as interpreter of the title role, Liam Neeson finally not part of the distribution 11 . He is then replaced by Daniel Day-Lewis 12 .

It was once a question that Harrison Ford plays Vice President Andrew Johnson 13 .

The shooting began in October 2011 in the State of Virginia 5 .

The soundtrack to Lincoln is released onin the United States . The music is composed by John Williams and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Chorus 14 , 15 .

Critical reception and historical verisimilitude

Lincoln is ranked 6th in the list of the ten best films of the year in Cahiers du cinéma 16 .

The historian André Kaspi regrets that by simplifying, Spielberg “distorts the meaning of the Civil War to make it only a battle for the equality of the races. “He said that this view is an anachronism and that there were other economic and diplomatic reasons the conflict 17 .

According to André Larané, these historical events are not important except for the preamble, a small text, “which reduces the civil war to a clash between wicked slavers (the secessionist Southerners) and gentile abolitionists (the Northerners). ” 18 . The rest of the film would be more nuanced and Spielberg does not hide anything of the ambiguities of Lincoln who although convinced of the ineptitude of slavery is “ready to compromise on its abolition provided that the unity of the nation is preserved”. André Larané highlights the “dazzling performance” of Daniel Day-Lewis in the role of Lincoln 18 .
