Elizabeth I is a British mini-series in two episodes directed by Tom Hooper , and broadcast on Channel 4 onin the United Kingdom, then on HBO in the United States, with Helen Mirren in the title role , and Jeremy Irons in that of her lover Count Robert Dudley .
The series is a critical success and receives several awards, including the Emmys and Golden Globes for Best Miniseries, Best Actress (Mirren) and Best Supporting Actor (Irons).
Later in the year, Helen Mirren plays in the film The Queen by Stephen Frears , biopic of Queen Elizabeth II , a role for which she won among others the Academy Award for Best Actress .
