Good entertainment, but a disturbing tendency to glorify the violence. The irony of using the military transports for drug running is lost, the reality of brutalisation on both sides, the destitute on the city streets and the brutalised blown minds of the soldiers.

The good guys win in the movie, but history records that the problem has escalated since. We need to stop using druguse as entertainment, it acclimatises people and encourages experimentation. Hence addiction and destitution. It's not worth it, get another script.

This is a well acted movie with great action and storytelling. Ridley Scott brings an amazing true-story with great casting.

The high-light of this film has to be Denzel Washington, he is fantastic throughout this whole movie. He plays a calm and collected Frank Lucas, and he brings us a refreshing character different from the roles we usually see him play. He is mirrored by another fantastic preformance from Russell Crowe who plays Richie Roberts, who is a police officer with tremendous amounts of integrity, not only do these two work well together they bring A-Class acting. Assisted also by a great performance from Josh Brolin, who plays a corrupted cop, looking for pay-outs.

The only real problem with this film is that with all this great acting the performances all seem a little distanced from each other, we only get good interaction between Washington & Crowe till the end and then it all wraps up pretty quickly.

Ridley Scott is a great director and this film is one of his best in a while.

75% - Above average movie, with some great moments!

While I did think this ran on a little bit (possibly because I was watching the extended version), I think this is definitely on of the best gangster flicks to come out in a long time. The performances were top notch, especially from Washington, and the ending was explosive and very rewarding. Overall a must watch for fans of the crime genre.

A gritty, intense look into the cause and effects of gang life in 1970s New York. Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington give strong performances in a wonderfully crafted film by Ridley Scott. While watching, I felt as if I were in the streets of New York's projects somehow watching these events unfold as if they were happening right outside my window.

I never expected such a movie from Mr. Scott, and was weary of how he would handle a gangster film of this magnitude. However, I was very pleased with the result after watching it, and now appreciate the versatility of Scott as a director and storyteller. He perfectly melds the film into a sense of reality, cementing his story to the events of the Vietnam War. The use of the war provided a great allegory to the success and fall of Frank Lucas.

Washington gives such a gripping performance as the mobster. I didn't enjoy watching Crowe as much. His accent was great, but he seemed awkward in some scenes.

I don't have much more to comment on this film except for the fact that I enjoyed watching it a lot.

The story Scott tells in "American Ganster" is truly remarkable, and sets it apart as the most successful gangster film of the 2000s.
