I finally got to see this movie after a lot of people have recommened it to me.

Con Air is just like every other action movie that came out in the 90's. Dumb silly fun this is what this movie is. Nicolas Cage plays a Army Ranger who kills a man by mistake while protecting his wife from thugs. His lawyer tells him to pleade guilty because of his milltary training. he goes to jail for 8 years. When he is finally out he has to board a prison plane basically.

The penal system does something very smart they decide to put all the craziest killers and rapists on the plane. That's really smart isn't. Of course you already know they take over the plane, and good old Cage gots to stop them. The movie is absurd and very implausible and ultraviolent. Hey, it was entertaining who wants more in a action film. A cacthy song, violence to say "eewwww" and Cage what more do you want.

There's not much plot going on but I'm sorry John Malkovich did not convince me as a bad guy. I did not feel malice it all felt forced but other then that it's a good thrill ride.

You know for such a great cast this movie fucking stinks for the most part. Nicolas Cage....how the fuck did you get this role? That is then worst southern accent I have ever heard in my life...yeah there are some good action scenes but this could have been so much better...the score was inappropriate at times and it seems like this mive should have been made for TV. I am being generous with my rating because the first half blows and the second half is good.

"Sorry, boss, but there's only two men I trust. One of them's me, the other's not you."
Nicolas Cage with long hair? Hell Yeah! I have watched Con Air for at least 10 times, maybe not the whole movie every time, but it's definately around 10. And let me tell you that it's a cliche-ridden, over the top, every sterotype using movie. And if you think that I said that in a bad tone, you're wrong. This is how you make an action movie that's thrilling and not too demanding. There's a mix of so many great characters in Con Air. They are mostly unrealistic, illogical sometimes but also funny, imposing and simply appealing to watch.
The story follows a U.S. Army Ranger Cameron Poe coming home from the war, meeting up with his pregnant wife. He gets into trouble defending himself from a bunch of drunks harrasing him and his wife. Accidentaly, he kills one of the attackers and ends up in a prison for 7 to 10 years. After years in prison he is finnally on his way home, eager to meet his daughter and return to his wife. He is catching a plane ride home full of nastiest convicts in the country. The convicts take over the plane and things start to get very complicated for Poe.
As I said there are plenty of interesting characters to be described here and if the director had decided to portray them in even more detail, this movie would be at least 3h long. But that would be unnecessary as this is not that kind of a movie.
Cameron Poe, Nicolas Cage. This is the role where I liked him the most. Yes, he is a hillbilly with a weird and funny accent, but he is just way too damn cool. I wanna be Cameron Poe when I grow up haha. His long hair, jeans & undershirt blend perfectly with his super-righteousness. Cyrus 'The Virus' Grissom. John Malkovich. He is the brains of the hijacking operation and a vicious criminal who has "done it all". I was impressed by Malkovich and thought the role fitted him perfectly. Bald, vicious and smart criminal who looks just as evil as he is. One other character that I must separate, and I think everyone who have seen this will agree, is Garland Greene played by Steve Buscemi. He won me over with this role and became my favourite actor since I first saw him as Greene. Not just the coolness in which he portrays the demented slaughterer, it's his face which doesn't even need any kind of grimace to show you how sick he is. The music following the first scenes with Garland Greene is also awesome and I thought it matched the demented psyche of his. Furthermore, there are some great actors involved here. John Cusack plays a role in which we have seen him over and over again, but he is still likeable. Ving Rhames also. Super-mean convict and one of the head people on the hijacking. And the list goes on...
Sometimes I feel that the pure, old-school action genre is dying away and that everytime they try to make a flick like this, something gets in the way like trying to raise questions (unnecesary for a pure action movie) for the viewer, or trying to look artistic, maybe simply go waaay over the top for anyone to like...or some crap like that. Bring back the good days. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I also like to let my mind go sometimes and just enjoy the explosions and witty sentences during the action scenes that you all like to repeat once in awhile just to sound cool.
I would recommend Con Air to everyone who likes to have fun watching movies and not always aim to find it's weaknesses, because let's face it, this ain't exactly the Oscar material. Lay back and enjoy the ride. And as Cyrus said: "Thank you for choosing 'Con Air'.".

Con Air is a action film in every sense of the word, as it has good car chases, big explosions, and great gun fights. With a good cast such as Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, John Malcavich, Danny Trejo, and Steve Buscami, you can't go wrong. John Malkavich's performance as the death row inmate "Cyrus the Virus" is one of his most overlooked. If you like action movies, pop this one in the dvd player and you won't be disappointed.

There is so much to say about Con Air. Through abandoned airfield explosions to John Cusack fighting John Malkovich on top of a fire engine, Con Air is a white knuckle ride through and through. Nicolus Cage's horrible accent and words of wisdom, "School is very important" and "Many hands make light work" are nothing short of cheesily inspirational. God bless you, Cameron Poe.

Simply put, Con Air is a non-stop action movie with a stellar cast. Nicolas Cage stars as Cameron Poe, an army veteran who is convicted of manslaughter, and ends up on a plane with the "worst of the worst" offenders while being transferred for his release on parole. Amazing performance in one of his best roles by John Malkovich as "Cyrus the Virus", and solid supporting roles played by John Cusack and Ving Rhames, among others. While the ending does not coincide at all with the nature of the rest of the film, moviegoers in search of a mindless action flick with good acting and solid one-liners will not leave disappointed.

The unfortunate end of 90's cheeseball action films, and the second-worst accent on film, second only to Keanu Reeves' Devil's Advocate.

Con Air (1997)
Directed by Simon West

Starring: Nicholas Cage, John Cusak, John Malkovich, & everyone else under the sun!

Now I realize that everyone loves the movies...hell...I know I do...but what most everyone loves more...is going to the movies. The thing is...with the economy in the toilet & a five year old daughter that demands a new Avatar toy daily...new movies are few & far between...so, quite often, I love to review what I consider the oldies but goodies.

That said...let's get on with it. Nicholas Cage plays Cameron Poe, a deep, deep, south parolee on the way home from prison to see his daughter (stuffed pink bunny in hand), stuck midair with a butt load of ruthless criminal transfers that highjack the plane midflight. Now, I've seen some great action flicks before & I've seen some fantastic comedies, but few & far between is one that actually blends the two as successfully as Jerry Bruckheimer's "Con Air" does.

John Malkovich plays Cyrus "the Virus" Grissom the criminal mastermind behind the hijacking & leader of the motley crew of criminals.

The band consists of super-star serial killer Garland Green (Steve Buscemi), repeat offender of all sorts Pinball (Dave Chappelle), black militant murderer Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames), multiple rapist Johnny 23 (Danny Trejo), & more names than I can go on to bark out.

The movie runs non-stop at a break neck pace as soon as the cons board & take the plane in hopes of making it to some "off the radar" airstrip (that serves as an aero-graveyard of sorts) & an alternate escape plane bound for Mexico. This one is a must see from start to finish. Poe(Cage) ends up sucking it up & staying on the plane due to the fact that he's got a fellow con/friend on board.

Soon to follow, is where U.S. Marshall Vince Larkin (good ole' John Cusak) comes in to play. Throughout the course of the movie he & Cameron Poe knuckle up through a series of "literally laugh out loud" means of communications. Really. Dropping bodies out of the plane with notes on it & silly things such as that...but what can you say...it's original.

No shit...this movie's got some of the best one liners ever scored in a movie.

John Malkovich to the pilot: "You say one word & the next wings you'll see are the ones of the flies buzzing over your rotting corpse!" or holding a gun to Poe's daughter's birthday gift, threatening Poe: "Make a move...& the bunny get's it!"

The highlight of the film, in wacko's humble opinion, is Malkovich & Buscemi...but Cage more than holds his own. It's a great watch for those of you who have yet to see it...I'll go ahead & let you in on the "let down"...the ending is a joke...but doesn't overall detract from the overall action & hilarity of the film.

Gotta roll fresh with this one...but if you're going to enjoy it...you need to check your brain at the door.

Really.

I good well written movie and would get a fresh rating if not borrowing from three others. Nicholas Cage doesan excellent job and this movie and I would see this one again. But the problem is the beginning is the Shawshank Redemption (except he really kills someone), the middle is turbulence, and the ending is essentially Die Hard. So why watch one ok movie when you can watch two good ones (Turbulence sucked)? Ok well that much aside it really is a good movie. The acting is well done, the plot is really good, and the explosions though unnessary are fun. It has a cool ending and is a nice expiernece. If not worth seeing once is at least worth seeing a handful of times. My recomendation? Rent it to see if you like it before you buy it. 2 and half "Don't move or the bunny gets it" out of five.
