Paul Newman at his coolest. A real man's picture.

They sure don't make movies like this anymore. The story was very realistic. The characters and conversations were all natural. What I love about this movie is how they portray prison life seemed bearable, and Luke was an interesting character. Love the ending, too. "See boys, what we got here is failure to communicate." I recommend this movie to everyone.

Newman is incendiary for sure, but really isn't the film just about how many boiled eggs a grown man can eat before he throws up?

Man, I love this movie. Newman was a perfect fit for that role.

Iconic and brilliantly acted as it may be, I have no idea what this film is about, in truth. However general the films plot seemed, I enjoyed every second of it. Newman's performance (and shirtless majesty) aids the film through mindless egg-eating and sexy car-washing scenes.

This is certainly on my top list as well. Great movie! One of Newman's best performances. Memorable lines, great scenes, great film work... this flick has it all. It has always been hard for me to decide what I like best: the fight scene at the prison, the egg eating bet or Newman digging a hole. They are all terrific scenes and just a joy to watch. If you have never seen Cool Hand Luke, you can not call yourself a movie fan.

90/100. Older movie from the 60s (1967)that was recommended to me. There was a story to this movie, but none of that would have mattered if Paul Newman wasn't in this. I have never seen his movies before, but he was a very cool guy who oozed charisma. He drove this movie and the montage towards the end of the movie of him in different situaitons smiling from earlier scenes of the movie would have been a great montage to play at his funeral when he passed away recently.

*** Spoilers ***

Newman's character was likeable, but didn't care much for rules. The only backstory we had on his character was when his mother visited him and said that she gave him a lot of attention, not his other brother, so the other brother was getting money from selling a store. I didn't understand the relevance of that, but there were a lot of real fun scenes. He was in a prison camp where the group worked on a chain gang. The cast was well put together- two actors I recognized was a young Dennis Hopper- and the prophet from HBO's Big Love, Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton is his real life name). The other leader of the group, George Kennedy, kind of reminded me of Captain Spalding from Rob Zombie's movies.

I had one of those "AH-HA" moments when Paul Newman was brought back to the prison gang after getting caught from his first attempt to flee.. the big wig on the prison camp said the famous quote "What we've got here is.. failure to communicate".

Some great scenes were when Paul Newman's character was attempting to eat 50 hard boiled eggs; a blonde girl was teasing the chain gang by washing her car in a skimpy dress (the guys sure did oogle over her); scene when Paul Newman's character sent back a magazine with a picture of him with two girls in his arms after his 2nd escape; the 2nd escape scene where he got the two black kids to help him get loose of his leg chains- it was funny how he outsmarted the scent-following dogs in this scene with the cayan powder- making them sneeze... I laughed during his first escape too when he would weave around in circles that made the dogs go nuts following his scent; the scene when they were being told the rules- "don't eat all your food, you get put in the box". You get put in the box for everything out of line, and there was a long list of things that would get you put in the box (a small space where you go for punishment for 24 hours- just given a bucket to poop and pee in I suppose).

If you don't like old movies, then you may not LOVE this movie, but I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this at least a little bit. This cast had great chemistry and Paul Newman was "the man" in this movie.

I guess I fell into peer presure it should be 90%, but ah what the heck it's Newman as a rebel!
