Brilliant movie of the 90's, one of the best, starts off kind of slow but really kicks in eventually, a great disaster movie which puts you on the edge

Decent jobs by Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton don't entirely save Dante's Peak from being Mediocre at best. The special effects are ok and the cinematography is convincing enough. The story is utterly predictable. After coming across all the main characters, you will know exactly what will happen to them. The film lacks in genuine surprises: what's the point when you know exactly what's going to happen. Then again, it's tolerable and it comes close to being decent.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for disaster movies so I'm obviously biased because I enjoy all of them. This one was pretty good because volcano movies are non-existent & let's face it, volcanoes are way scarier than tornadoes, tsunamis or meteors. Loved the part where the grandmother jumped in the lake of acid - it was the best part.

I like the destruction in a disaster movie. This was at least realistic. More than I can say for Volcano.

This and "Volcano" were released very close together, and had similar plots. And they had another thing in common. They're bad. But, "Volcano" is only a bad movie. This, on the other hand, is terrible. It's boring, cliched, predictable (see boring), and just will suck the fun from any eager audience. The story is simple, a town is built near a volcano, Pierce Bronsan tries to warn them thy don't listen and then everyone panics runs, and now it's survival time. How interesting. Bronsan plays a volcanologist named Harry Dalton and the usally talented Linda Hamilton plays Rachel Wando, the Mayor of Dante's Peak. (The town's name.)

Of course you get a undevoloped relationship between them, which is at it's peak in the first three seconds they meet. Wando has two kids, Lauren, who constantly screams "Mommy! Mommy!", and Graham, a young punk who learns to be a man. Oh boy. As much as I hate those kids, it still got a good laugh out of me whenever Dalton says things like "Come here, children" or "Get into the car, children." Yeah, he's unusally close to them for a guy who's know them one day. Of course there are comic relief guys, who aren't funny, and the Mayor has issues with her mother, which no one care's about.

The Mayor's mom jumps in acid to save the kid and I didn't feel anything when she died. Then I was thinking, "I guess I don't care about these characters." But I was mistaken, because I really wanted to see them buried in lava by the films end. I grew really angry when the last idiotic moment I was willing to accept involved Pierce Bronsan driving though lava (you read that right) and the kids see thier dog Ruffy and save him. The dog lives? Bronsan can drive over lava? The dogs name is Ruffy?

Some said it was a fun romp with good effects, and I disagree. It was boring and the effects were run of the mill. This film fails in just about every area, 1 out of 10.
