Not a deep story, but I liked what it had to offer, and it did the 40's urban detective thing nicely enough.

Race has it's place in this modern noir. Review below.

Devil in a Blue Dress - 7/10
Director - Carl Franklin
Starring - Denzel Washington, Jennifer Beals, Don Cheadle, Tom Sizemore, Maury Chaykin, Albert Hall, Lisa Nicole Carson, Terry Kinney.
"Easy" Rawlins (Denzel Washington) is a WWII vet who loses his job in a factory and is in dire need of money to pay his mortgage. Easy is approached by a mobster named Albright (Sizemore) to do some detective work. Albright is looking for Daphne Monet (Beals) a white woman who was once set to marry mayoral candidate Todd Carter (Kinney). Since Daphne is known to frequent black establishments, Albright believes Easy is a good choice to find her. As Easy gets closer to locating the woman, bodies begin turning up making Easy the prime suspect.

Devil in a Blue Dress is blessed with an authentic look, much care was taken to ensure it's period detail. It's a modern noir with a slight twist as racial overtones are constantly present as Easy travels from black neighborhoods to white neighborhoods. The acting is solid, especially Don Cheadle who steals every scene as the maniacal trigger-happy friend. Although it's not a signficant film by any stretch, it's certainly better than many of the more popular modern noirs of the nineties.

Not too movie mad these days. I'm more jazzed right now about the fact that a Keef Hartley Band album I've wanting to get my hands on for over 20 years just came out on CD. :D

"9 Songs" and "The Aristocrats", two movies I actually want to see are coming out this weekend so I may go to one of those. Then again I can go always go over to Video Americain in Takoma Park and pick up all manner of weird shit.

I have noticed in going over message boards here and on other sites that my tastes are a bit different than a lot of other net people, not just because I'm older, but because I'm waaay different. For that reason I'm going to be putting together a list of my 100 favorite movies soon. For here, not the forums because I don't know how to do all that still frames stuff they do. Still it should be a bit unique. I can already guarantee that Kevin Smith's movies will be nowhere near the list.:down:
