A slow ride through hell, this film is not, as one critic wrote, "for idiots." The sparse, stage-like set may feel distracting at first, as actors open fake doors and talk behind virtual walls, but eventually Grace's plight adjusts our minds to the unusual backdrops. Lars takes his time dramatizing the smallest of details, so get comfy and have patience. The slow pace is partially agonizing and partially critical to the overwhelming sense that life just gets worse and worse and worse (a running theme of Lars' - not very cheery, but very intriguing.) Viewers might question their own sense of morality by the end - another great trick in Lars' bag.

Brilliant film. I liked the stage thing, a lot of people didn't, but that's not the point. The movie it's about human beings and the horrible things they can do, saying (and maybe thinking) they are very good people and that those things the only possible thing to do. It's a punch on every human face, so it's hard to accept it. If you do, however, it can change the way you see the world.

A superb film -- so intense, so well-acted, so well-written, that one easily forgets that there is no set! The film is shot entirely on a soundstage, with the set marked on the floor like in a rehearsal. The audience's ability to see through walls is exploited to stage simultaneous scenes; however, the sense of realism remains palpable throughout. Utterly brilliant.

I'll admit, this movie is an acquired taste, but if you can stay with it for the nearly 3hrs running time you will be ultimately rewarded. The ending is superb and almost justifies the bits that aren't needed. This is an unusual movie as it is filmed on a sound-stage with limited props.

The movie was long but really brilliant at showing the human nature in different situation. This movie is not for everybody. Specially the ones who judge a movie by the visuals or the sets and location. I'm sure the movie was a low budget one as not much spending was required for the location. It is a brave movie and depends on performances more than the look of the overall movie. Performance wise you will not be dissapointed. Nicole was at her best as Grace and Paul Bettany as Tom couldn't be better.

I enjoyed the way the story was going and I'm always fond of good narration presentation in a movie. The narration here was really interesting.

The movie deserves the critical acclaim it received. It is a good movie and should entertain you specially if you are fond of artistic movies.

I didn't really get the point of it. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, it's just different from the others. While I was watching it I was expecting something, some action maybe but it didn't come... Dogville is strange...

Great story, Huits clos type, about human nature vs. societal ruling.

Set is theatre, Story is theatre, Actors are theatre, so why a movie?

If this was life in a proper venue, it would rate close to 100%.

To say this movie is dark and cynical view of human nature is an understatement. Great dialogue in the final scene with James Caan and Nicole Kidman debating whether man is inherently good or bad. the answer is obvious.

I like alot of Lars Von Trier and I think he has a great mind. There is an important message throughout this film I'm sure and I did try hard to pick up on some of it. However the theatre stage-type set and long running time took it's toll on me. Now then, I have sat through the whole of Kingdom (the Von Trier series edited together for a 5 hour theatrical release) and loved it. I love the settings, majestic long shots and emotional turmoil of his work that turns the inside of your chest to knots. Dogville, however, didn't hold my attention and although I like Von Trier's fastidiousness I really found this to be too much to bear.

Painful.
Nicole Kidman gets shit on for 3 plus hours for what reason? well after 3 hours who really gives a shit?

To make matters worse it's all a Narrator.
If you have two options, see Dogville or watch your local theater go support your community. Kidman already has enough money.

Plays should be plays. Movies should be movies.
I will never budge on this.
I hated Dogville, and I don't hate a lot of movies.
