Why do corporate CEOs get such big bonuses? Answer: Because they are able to use their entire organization to attack their counterparts in other organizations. Or so Duplicity would have you believe. That and the fact that they hire former MI-6 and CIA agents to do their corporate espionage for them. Duplicity got me to suspend my disbelief about that, but unfortunately, it could barely keep me awake the first 45 minutes as it explained it.

Clive Owen and Julia Roberts did a good job as those aforementioned former agents. The interaction between them was entertaining (eventually) as the two former agents that fall for each other. Which took some time since, as former agents, they never knew when to believe each other. Anyway, the two of them attempted to scam both the large corporations only to discover that a CEO also gets his hugh annual bonus because he's craftier than two former intelligence agents. Now I will no longer feel so bad when I see those large CEO bonuses reported in the Wall Street Journal.....

For the first 40-50 minutes, I was like- What the hell is going on in this movie? But this supposed-to-be-funny becomes real fun only after that, when some plots are actually revealed. Of course, there is just too much, too too much going on in the narrative and it is difficult to really enjoy a movie when half of the time you are just trying to figure out that what is this all about.
Nonetheless, eventually I did enjoyed it. Sexy, funny, feisty, corporal and intelligent( a little over, actually), but a good weekend watch. And the only one thing which was more smashing than the ending was the fiery chemistry between the leads. Oh man, Roberts and Owen were hot, really hot!!

It was...surprisingly a boring movie. The ending was predictable. I thought with all the back and forth scenes, the ending would surprise the crap out of me but it didn't. But the chemistry between them were cute. And I love the frame per frame scenes. Overall it was boring, yes, but it was okay.

Little long and Julia doesn't play a good operative, she is better in romantic comedies. Clive is cool, he is good in everything

I'm not usually a great fan of films starring Clive Owen, but in this case I've had to make an exception. He's as witty and charming as he usually is, but this time, playing opposite Julia Roberts he appears to have finally learned how to act. In all the other roles I've seen him in before he's never really struck me as a leading man, but in this film I think he's cracked it! But enough about him, let's talk about the film as a whole.

Howard Tully and Richard Garsik are two big businessmen, and as such are very careful with their sensitive industrial secrets. To this end they employ teams of industrial spies to keep tabs on each other. Ray Koval is working for British Intelligence when he meets Claire Stenwick, who is working for the CIA at the time. After a bit of a false start they eventually hit it off and hatch a plan to get rich. They will go into the private sector with the idea of ripping off some rich businessmen. To this end Claire is employed by Garsik and sent to spy on Tully, later on, Ray is also employed by Garsik, but by now doesn't know whether he can still trust Claire. With me so far? We are told that Tully is about to announce a new major product and Garsik wants to steal it. Claire and Ray also want to steal it, but do they trust each other? Just who can you trust in this twisted game? I guess you'll have to watch the movie to find out...

I was pleasantly surprised by this film; I found it very entertaining with some really good performances. I liked the style of the film, the story is told partly in flashback, which really helped in keeping the story fresh. In each flashback a little bit more was revealed about out two main protagonists. I thought it was an excellent performance from Clive Owen as Ray Koval, and Julia Roberts was easily his equal as Claire Stenwick. I also very much enjoyed the performances of Tom Wilkinson as Howard Tully and Paul Giamatti as Richard Garsik, both really pulled all the stops out!

Over all, a very entertaining crime thriller with more than a hint of romance thrown in on the side. A very enjoyable way to while away a couple of hours and a film I can heartily recommend.

My score: 7.5/10

This movie clearly lost it's way.

It was a horrible use of a great lead actor/actress, as well as host of other well known talent.

It appears the writers were smoking something, and the smoke won.

I rate it 100% for being unnecessarily confusing, boring, and long. It is story-telling at it's worst.

I would have been furious if I had went to the theater, and plopped down good money for this time-waster.

not a review just my thoughts
Duplicity is a long drama and it feels like it. The great performances by Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, and Paul Giamatti are the best part of this film. The story is well written and directed by Tony Gilroy, but it is so witty, it is almost to the point of confusing. Throughout I couldn't figure out who is working for who or why. I felt it jumped around so much I couldn't figure out when in time they were or what part of the story they were trying to explain. The story is so complex so I wont fill you in so I'll just say its about agents undercover back stabbing large companies. The movie is moderately intriguing but it couldn't completely reel me in. Overall I liked it but I wouldn't watch it again or really suggest it with all the other ones of similar style. Its a good film but a little to much confusion and twists for my taste.

Nominated for Golden Globe. Another 1 nomination
