Groundhog Day is a comedy that follows an arrogant news reporter, Phil Connors, who self centeredness has found him alone, plying through life and worrying only about his accomplishments. Following him to do what he claims will be his last report on his least favorite trip, he encounters a life dilemma of reliving the same day over and over again until he is able to see the true light and find what truly makes him happy. Of course this is after he screws around and has his fun, goes insane, then accepts it.
The direction of the film by Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters) was good. It highlighted the talents of the cast that fit the film very nicely. Ramis who has worked in many comedies takes a basic concept and turns it into a great film about coming of age and finding the important things in life that make people happy. The final cu of the film made for a decent picture and was aesthetically pleasing to the audience. Although it was a quirky comedy, he did break away from the goofier, over the top comedies he had been involved with before films he had been known for and normally been associated with.
The writing of the script was excellent though now some dialogue would be considered cheesy in a sense, but the message of the film is one that can truly be treasured. Ramis wrote the script with Danny Rubin (writing debut) and together wrote a treasured classic that has been shared and enjoyed by viewers for almost the last twenty years. Everyone has at some point wished to go back in time and redo the day to make it better but watching it occur in this hilarious fashion, got the message across that happiness takes effort and cannot happen overnight. It also must take a large change in character, which as we can see the main character change throughout time, is worth the ending happiness.
The script was very strong but it was accented by the strong acting that stepped in front of the camera. Bill Murray (Ghostbusters) did a wonderful job and showed a kind of growth, although still in his typecast role, was able to show good emotional gratitude towards the viewer and allow them to connect. His ability to show ease in change within the character showed immense ability as an actor and not just a comedian. Andie MacDowell (Short Cuts) did well as the innocent supporting character for which the lead character falls for and is willing to change. She seemed to roll right out of bed and into this role with ease, as she showed poise and ability to just roll with the camera and others she was sharing the screen with. Her chemistry with Murray was good and it appeared to be a good match that complimented each other. Chris Elliot (The Abyss) provided some awkward comedic moments as the dorky camera man, that made laughing and pity upon the character easy. Altogether a strong cast sent the great script soaring.
This film is one that is a real treasure. It is one that shows happiness is hard to get but once achieved is definitely worth it. The great work achieved by the entire crew will make this an enjoyable film for many years. This picture is worth a look plus many more as it warms the hearts of many viewers with a few laughs along the way.

Groundhog Day....hmmm...where to begin? Well, first of all, if you have never watched Groundhog Day before you need to get off of your computer and get it now!!!

This is just not pure entertainment, which it is, but one of most spiritual films I seen. It's probably one of those movies you can call almost perfect (I believe no film is perfect) and the moral of self-improvement is right on.

Besides that, this movie is fun and has some great romantic scene. Bill Murray and MacDowell have some strong chemistry.

Very funny movie, but I do think it's a little overrated, by about 10%. Don't get me wrong though, this movie is great! It's just a 96% is too much.

regardless of what trite venom commentators had to say about BILL MURRY and BILL MURRY'S statement of GROUNDHOG DAY'S script being one of the best scripts he's read, I agree with BILL MURRY.

GROUNDHOG DAY IS probably one of the best comedy scripts ever written. With BILL MURRY having starred in EXCELLENT comedy films like CADDYSHACK, MEATBALLS, STRIPES, GHOSTBUSTERS and performing during some of the best seasons of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, I would certainly respect him as a man and his opinions as an actor who has worked in show-business almost as long as I've been alive--I'm 38 Years old.

for me to accurately appraise comedies is difficult, I don't know comedies or musicals nearly as well as I know horror films.

With comedy films I usually say IT'S AWESOME if it is AWESOME.
and GROUNDHOG DAY is AWESOME . . . its a true EPIC-Comedy (e.g. BILL MURRY'S character DOES INDEED evolve during the course of the film)

--COMEDY FILMS (and HORROR FILMS) are always "DISSED" by the ACADEMY just as BILL MURRY said today in his interview with a United Kingdom (BRITISH) based newspaper.

COMING TO AMERICA could have been nominated for an OSCAR as well as GROUNDHOG DAY . . . even TRADING PLACES and GHOSTBUSTERS were and are OSCAR WORTHY as well as THE BLUES BROTHERS.
--
--good point you made there today BILL MURRY:
THE MOTION PICTURE ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES totally DISRESPECTS comedy, horror, and science-fiction films in terms of honoring them as being possible BEST PICTURES.

Groundhog Day was, perhaps, one of the most pleasant surprises of movies I've seen. I knew it would be a decent movie, but I expected the usual trend of Hollywood's handling fantasy-comedies with great premises. It would be good, but not great. It would have good characters, but nothing remarkable. The story would not take the idea as far as it could go without going over the top.
This was not the case.
Bill Murray, perfect for the role, plays on all of the aspects of the character; his subtleties and his peculiarities.
I don't think the filmmakers left any idea uncovered. I was thinking during the film: "Okay, what if he just stayed awake all night?" And he does, and the day still repeats itself. And I thought: "Well, what happens if he kills himself?" Simple, he's suddenly alive the next day.
Nothing is really explained, which is what I loved. I loved there not being a deus ex machina at the end of the picture. No god came down and told Murray how to fix everything; he had to figure it out one his own.
The acting is great. All the actors play their characters perfectly adequately, and I have to admire Murray's performance, as I've already said.
I have absolutely no complaints with this film. It's not only a great comedy, it's a great fantasy. And it gets one hell of a cheer out of me at the end.

In honour of groundhog day.

This is one of Bill Murray's best performances after Ghostbusters. Even though this is considered to be a romantic comedy, this is a brilliant film.
......I would write some more..........but I'm too tired to think.........maybe if tomorrow would be today.......

One of the funniest comedies of all time and a great movie to watch on Groundhog Day!

Well, it's Groundhog Day, and the groundhog, once again, sees his shadow, and he have six more weeks of winter. But that's OK. That's why I decided to review this movie!

"Groundhog Day" is, like I said, one of the funniest comedies I have ever seen in my life. Bill Murray is a funny actor; I especially loved him in "Ghostbusters" and "What About Bob". But this movie is where he is at his funniest.

"Groundhog Day" is about a weatherman named Phil Connors (Bill Murray) who finds out that the holiday Groundhog Day, which is his least favorite holiday, is repeating over and over again.

One of the funniest parts in the movie is when Phil meets Ned (Stephen Tobolowsky), he punches him in the face. I also liked how when he wakes up, the same music on his alarm clock plays as if it were played every day, and the part where he tries to dispose of the groundhog.

"Groundhog Day" is a must-see for any Bill Murray fan and fans of comedy movies.

Final Score: 100/100 (Awesome)
