I can't say I enjoyed this movie, but it kept me interested. Ryan Gosling does a fantastic job in the lead, playing his character better than anyone else could have, and Shareeka Epps is also marvelous.

Other than the excellent acting performances, this movie falls a little flat. The plot is decent, not throwing any reals surprises at you, but it's convincing, gritty, and somehow uplifting.

This movie won't appeal to everyone, but no matter who you are you have to appreciate that it was well done.

Ryan Gosling plays Dan Dunne, a high school teacher in a rundown Brooklyn school and the story centres around his handling of personal demons against his dedication as a teacher. There are key performances by Anthony Mackie who plays Frank, the local drug dealer and Shareeka Epps who plays Drey, his pupil with whom Gosling's character forms an unlikely friendship.

Half Nelson is a ruminative and beautifully shot little film. It's a little unwholesome in places but it's crucial to the plot given the subject matter of children and connections to substance abuse.

Ryan Gosling is an exciting actor and it's amazing to think it's the same actor from Lars and The Real Girl. There's a fluency to his acting as the woeful but often charming teacher, who believes in his abilities and what's important to his pupils whilst battling against the prescribed school curriculum.

Gosling undoubtedly makes the film what it is and I truly found it an inspiring and sensitive work of brilliance.

Great performance by Ryan Gosling. The story of this movie is a very unique and original one. The movie is slow at times, but was still a good movie. The relationship between the teacher and student is kind of weird and a little awkward at times.

This movie SUCKS. And not just a little bit; it's difficult to imagine how it could suck any harder.

I fail to see why critics rate garbage like this so highly. Sure, Gosling did a good job with the acting, but it's still a couple of hours that would have been MUCH better spent playing solitare!

The consensus gets this one about right. This is an outstanding small film about inner-city teacher that forms a bond with a student. Relax, this isn't another one of those white teachers saving the poor misguided young black folk. It's a realistic tale of two people with a large age gap that forum and unlikely friendship. Contrary to what certain films tried to display in the 90's, even some of the people with good intentions have problems of their own.

Thankfully, up and coming actor Ryan Gosling delivers a great performance. Usually known for his down home southern charm, Ryan puts all that aside to give a great performance as a teacher with problems of his own. His subtle performance isn't one to forget anytime soon. Shareeka Epps is also outstanding as the young student trying to come to the rescue of the teacher.

VERDICT:
9/10 Student/Teacher Boundary Issues

One of the best movies of 2006 and proof that Ryan Gosling is one of the best up-and-coming actors out there today.

Dull, needy, says nothing, pessimistic. Gosling goons through the semblance of a plot that seems to have been written by a particularly needy and pretentious teenager.
