The first part of this movie had my interest, but sadly I kinda lost interest along the way.

My Review: I liked this movie once it got going, but it almost seemed like it was trying to cover too much territory in 2 hours: spoiled rich girl, limping Spanish girlfriend, Irish boyfriend who is in another social class (of course), sexual romps, sadomachism, Spanish Civil War, resistence movement in WWII, war scenes, espionage, and misunderstandings. Some of the subplots could have been eliminated in favor of spending more time on the two main characters and their lives. Thank goodness Townsend and Theron were wonderful together because it was their relationship that made the movie enjoyable. Note: No, the film was not done in black and white.

SYNOPSIS:
In a time torn apart by hatred and violence, two lifelong lovers are forced to choose between passion and personal convictions, their fate intertwined with the painful history of a world at war.

(** 1/2):

Quite boring with a very uninteresting leading man. Theron does what she can and Cruz does so too with her very little screen time, but they just cannot support this film enough for me to recommend.

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS (2004, Duigan)

boring, boring, depressing, boring. charlize theron's acting is just terrible. ick. this film had potential...with it's cast and it's subject matter, but what a terribly executed movie. even the so-called "steamy sex scenes" were just boring. my eyes literally hurt from the strain of trying to pay attention to this dreck.

blah.

Sometimes you really just feel like some simple, pure, entertainment. This is what this movie is. Add to this outstanding costumes/setting and magnificent image quality. loves it.

"Head in the Clouds" starts out at Cambridge University in 1933. Guy(Stuart Townsend) is a scholarship student from Ireland. A very wet and beautiful Gilda(Charlize Theron) stumbles into his room one rainy night. After Guy helps her out of her dress, they spend a platonic night together. A beautiful friendship is born which evolves into an on-again/off-again relationship. Guy eventually moves in with Gilda in Paris to become her assistant while she pursues a career in photography. Completing the triangle is Mia(Penelope Cruz) who is a Spanish refugee/ex-stripper with a limp who was rescued by Gilda and now has dreams of becoming a nurse.

The first half of "Head in the Clouds" is not bad but when the movie turns serious in the second half, it gets extremely ponderous and credibility goes out the window. I do suppose the writer/director wanted to make a statement but fails miserably. But it is certainly well-photographed.(A tip of the hat to the cinematographer.) And Charlize Theron, conveying the perfect combination of sexiness and vulnerability, is simply too good for low-level soap opera material like this.
