"IN THE LAND OF WOMEN" (2007) ..... B ... This movie provides a thoughtful examination of different relationships with a fine cast of well-developed characters brought to life by Meg Ryan, Adam Brody, Kristen Stewart, Olympia Dukakis, and others. It is a pleasure to see Dukakis in two recent movies, here and in "Away From Her," after her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress 20 years ago for her role in "Moonstruck." She is always a delight with her acerbic wit and strong characterizations.

I consider myself to be a fan of this type of movie, but this is really a rather heavy duty chick flick with a story that I found only to be mildly interesting. All of the parts are here in a capable effort written and directed by Jon Kasdan, but this film just didn't grab me. Unfortunately, it isn't all that memorable in spite of the strong performances. (The director genes must run in the family, as Jon Kasdan is the son of director Lawrence Kasdan, the brother of director Jake Kasdan, and a nephew of director Mark Kasdan.)

Instead of a young man who returns home, this is the story of a young LA yuppie who travels to a different home and learns as much about himself as he does about life and the other people who inhabit a small leafy, tree-lined block in a distant Midwestern town. There is a quiet growth on the part of Carter Webb (Adam Brody), as this story portrays the mutually beneficial effect that he has with its female characters. All other men in this movie are minor characters who exist solely on the periphery of the story, so Carter is more or less alone "In the Land of Women."

The movie toys with us a little in presenting a situation in which he is tempted to have a relationship with both the mother (Ryan) and the daughter (Stewart), the one about 15 years older and the other about 10 years younger. It is all tastefully handled, but titillating and somewhat troubling nonetheless, since both women are facing crises that leave them open and vulnerable.

Carter Webb (Adam Brody) is a young, 26 year old man who has achieved some success as a Hollywood screenwriter of soft porn flicks. He is not particularly proud of this fact, so he lies to his family and tells them that he writes children's stories. In reality, he would like to leave Hollywood, if only for a short time, in order to write something else other than the soft porn scripts that have been his m

I didn't think I would like this movie, but suprisingly I did. It's a chick flick that falls into the guilty pleasure category.

It's a film that you can ask yourself, "does this happens in real life?". Well, there's an answer to that question too and it's "maybe". It's unusual but suprisingly you can enjoy this one. And honestly, I loved Kristen Stewart's acting here more than Bella in Twilight but maybe it's because she wasn't engaged with any vampires. Anyway, it's a film I can recommend for those who love a not too dragging nor boring storyline.. It's a 6/10 for me.

In the Land of Women is as real and entertaining as it gets. I think restraint was applied in some cases in the movie vs. allowing a more normal progression of events to take place...for example when the characters Carter (Brody) and Lucy (Stewart) find themselves in the position to be intimate...they chose restraint. I am not so sure that would have really happened if the this relationship happened in real life. However, with that said, overall I quite enjoyed the journey this movie took me on and in particular the performances of Ryan, Brody, Stewart, and even the young actress Dukakis.

Guilty pleasure. But does anything like this usually happen in real life? No. This film was supposed to be one that you could relate to, it seems, but the target was missed. Vague characters. They tried to make the characters have supposed "flaws", but they were only likable obviously-stated flaws. So the characters were just vague and heartless. But I do like Adam Brody....haha.

I thought this was a good movie and I enjoyed the characters and actors. I had never seen Brody in anything and I liked him right away. I thought it was an interesting drama...

For some reason, I really enjoyed this film, even though in retrospect, I see what it may have lacked. The pace of the film, the setting, and the likability of the characters, just made for an easy, enjoyable film to watch with the family or on a plane. I think what disappointed most people was that, Carter, the main character, didn't have any real relationships with any of the other characters. And since the title is as it is, we expected him to go through much more. Some issues I had with the movie were that, Carter did not seem nearly as depressed as he could have been. The father's role was too minor and his cheating was never addressed by Sarah. This movie does try, however, to give a glimpse into the lives of women, of different ages as well, but I just think their portrayals did not have that sense of honesty that makes for a really convincing storyline.

I enjoyed this film a lot. Aside from some boring parts, the overall movie was great. The story was nice and crisp and the acting was really good. Adam Brody surprisingly did a great job in this film. Meg Ryan was good too. It was nice to see a movie that took place in Michigan too. You do not see that a lot.

This is the kind of movie I call a "girl's movie". Beware guys: watch this only if your girlfriends force you. It's not bad, it's just not worth the while, it's not particularly funny and it's filled with feminine drama (cheating husband, breast cancer, and so on...); it delivers what it promises.

This movie just reminds you of how people can be in your life for a short ammount of time and impact you for life.
