Dear lord, this movie is BORING. Why? The dialogue is bland, the action is dull and even laughably bad at times, the effects are average despite its huge budget, the acting is wooden, and the film does nothing big or epic. None of the characters are developed. When someone dies you don't care or feel anything. It just leaves you with one less character to not care about even though you didn't care about them in the first place.

The only thing in this movie that might be remotely cool is the Dark One, but considering it gives us almost no backstory on him and we only see a few quick glimpses of him in the last 15 minutes, he pretty much sucks too. I could go on a rant about how retarded and pointless the glaive is too but I'll save you that. My question is why is it featured on the box cover when we don't get to see it used until the end of the film and even then it does nothing and is entirely worthless.

I just sat through a two hour film and didn't feel any other emotion other than boredom. Not even disgust...

Science-fiction vs Medieval Fantasy. Original action/adventure back in 1983, plays homage to the likes of Star Wars, Sword & Sorcerer etc.
Great movie and love it now as I did when I was a kid. Classic cliche of a swashbuckling group of Dungeons & Dragons type adventurers, on a heroic quest to destroy alien invaders and a young Prince sets out to rescue the beautiful Lyssa (Lysette Anthony-19 at the time) from the evil clutches of deluded out of proportion Beast. To top off, a superb soundtrack from the masterful James Horner - (Aliens, Titanic, Troy).
What's not to enjoy?
Being a fan of sci-fi and fantasy, this would be a perfect choice for anyone in the family - but lets look at the film itself.
The story is set on a faraway world with twin-suns (not Tatooine then), when this massive hulk of a starship/fortress (Transformer?), lands on the planet - thus- starting an invasion. Fierce aliens imaginatively called 'Slayers' with their lethal neon spears (blaster & sword in one - the Army should takes notes!) hell bent on destroying everything and everybody in their path.
Only one thing remains which stands in their way of a global victory is the resistance of two ancient armies, the Crimson Knights & Grey Knights I label them as. These warriors it is told are quite opposed to the other so the last thing they need is a legion of aliens interfering so the only answer to fight them is to form an uneasy Alliance forged by the two Kings of Krull. This union would be solidfied by the marriage of Colwyn (Ken Marshall) & Princess Lyssa (Cute Lysette) - whom love each other and seems to having a forbidden relationship anyway.
Cue the aliiance/marriage at Lyssa's very vulnerably placed Palace and the Slayers attack. Lyssa is abducted for the Beast, all the elite guards are wiped out, King's killed and a Kingdom in tatters. Colwyn survives and is mentored back into action by an old hermit (Obi-Wan, no Ynnr). We then move to many sweeping panoramic shots of Krull, the finding of a magical weapon called the Glaive and Colwyn recruits some vagabonds, rogues, thieves and criminals led by the brilliant (Alun Armstrong). His comrades consist of some of British finest in their early days, (Liam Neeson, Robbie Coltrane, Todd Carty) and they team up, batltling constant attacks from Slayers with ease. (So much for the Royal Guard who supposed to be trained soldiers!)
When all clues to the secretly hidden Black Fortress are either lost or killed, Ynnr tracks down his lost love (Francesca Annis) who portrays the evil Widow Of The Web, it's abit unclear how she came to be there and Ynnr's back story - apart from it being quite tragic. However she is overwhelmed again and helps him out at the cost of their lives. It is a magical world!
Finally, Colwyn & hs intrepid group use fire mares (Flying horses, Pegasus retired after Clash Of The Titans), and infiltrate Black Fortress fighting off more Slayers and taking casualties on the way. Until the main event where Colwyn duels with the Beast killing him with his natural power. (A flamethrower hand - Cool!) Reunited with Lyssa, the couple along with Alun Armstrong, Todd Carty, some annoying magician called Ergo and a little scamp escape the collapsing fortress before it is vaccumed in space.
Finishing shot, a beautiful meadow and a knackered team. A dubbed Lysette still in her wedding dress is saved and the narrator predicts that they're gonna have sons that will rule the galaxy. They run off into the pastures and the end of the fairytale. Jokes aside though, entertaining film, silly in places but always has the feel good factor of escapsim.

Krull is probably one of the most unusually favored cult films of all time. I've never seen Krull before this weekend, but I've heard mixed reviews on it and was curious to see how I would come out of seeing it. I can see why the film has its fans. It has everything a fantasy junkie could ask for. The problem with Krull is that if you have seen any number of fantasy flicks/shows or read any books/comics, you will see that this film has a lot of "borrowed" elements from them.

Actually, a lot of Krull felt familiar. Even the music in the film seemed to be mimicking other sci-fi and fantasy movie's scores. It was an interesting idea to mix both a medieval fantasy setting with a level of science fiction. But there were times where this mix didn't go over well. Like, how come Krull's soldiers had swords that fired lasers, but rather than continue to fire lasers at people, they opted to sword fight at close range?

The look of the sets and the costumes were awesome. The sets are noticeable fake, but it did add an otherworldly feel to the film. I really like Krull's space rock castle thing that I guess he travels to different worlds in. And his army were pretty cool looking as well. Not Star Wars' Stormtroopers cool looking, but cool none the less.

Krull is basically a hero's journey. The problem with this is that the movie wastes so much time with its cool looking sets, and various traps and difficulties for our heroes to get stuck in, that I forgot what Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) was setting out to accomplish (it was to save his bride Princess Lyssa (Lysette Anthony) by the way). And Krull, the major villain of the film, isn't shown or developed at all in the film, and all we get is this really lame battle between Colwyn and him at the end that isn't satisfying.

This film is either going to win you over with its stupidity, or it will turn you away. But the one viewing is one that I think all science fiction and fantasy fans should do. It was a good effort from Peter Yates, a director who has better movies under his belt (I.E. Bullitt). And seeing some familiar faces, like Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane, in the film was oddly amusing.

Well i remember this film gave me nightmares as a young lad and i can say safely it has once again, though this time round twenty something years laters it's not the monsters on horseback it's the acting from our lead!!!!. Where o where did they find this bloke? was he a washed up soap star?
The movie itself is pretty standard quest affair and the script has load of cliches "on the top of the highest mountain" "the wise old man" etc but it's nice to spot some of the actors as the were staring out in there younger years a rather thin robiie coltrane and liam nelson. A good score from a great composer. If you had kids and a rainy saturday give it a go they will like it but as a 30 year old man i should have left it in the past

Great movie from the time period. Should have a lot bigger cult following than it does. Great story elements, and was a movie I remember fondly from my childhood.

Well I can't believe I have never seen this before. It was GREAT! Cheesy, but in a good way. Entertaining and who can dislike a movie with Liam Neeson in it? I can't!

So glad I watched this movie!
