I was more than a little surprised when I discovered this was not the dramatic western epic I imagined. Little Big Man is a screwball comedy set in the violent era of the American colonization. Hoffman's totally over the top performance sets the tone - but curious, deeper roles, like the seductive Dunaway's Louise make it a story worth telling.

Powerful historical drama about the development (or raping) of the West and how the white man treated the American indian.

Climaxes with Little Big Horn and General Custer, this is one of the few American films that didn't sterotype indians. Masterfully filmed, directed, this film is a must see by any student of cinema.

Dances with Wolves was said to be great for the modern era, but this one beat it by many a mile. Full of comic relief, the film just keeps ploding along, showing the history of the man as he retells it to a microphone in the beginning.

A circumspect 121 year old man tells his story of his life.
Fascinating drama depicting life in the pioneer West. Culminating in Custer's Last Stand, Leslie Neilson plays a terrific and horrifying General Custer, hell bent on destroying the American Indian.

Dustin Hoffman has a say in this, however. He has managed to gain the confidence of Custer and in so doing leads him to his disastorous Battle of Little Big Horn.

A long movie, 2 hours 40 minutes, but well worth every minute. A young Hoffman and beautiful Faye Dunaway star in a most convincing way. Chief Dan George makes a memorable scene at the end of the film. Directed by Arthur Penn.

Quite worthy of watching more than once, which is more than I can say about most films.

***1/2 (out of four)

Unusual but invigorating western that is both poignant and very funny. Director Arthur Penn has created a unique and memorable film experience.

Dustin Hoffman plays a 121 year old native american who recounts all the adventures he had in his life growing up in the 1800's.

Little Big Man may be off-putting at first glance to the members of later generations, but the positives behind watching this movie are substantial, not the least of which being its incredible entertainment value.

The movie is a life-story, following a very young Dustin Hoffman from childhood to old age as he encounters Native Americans, gunfighters, and the US military all during the mid to late 1800s era of American history.

The movie presents native american culture in a positive light, changing the usual perception of a simplistic group of people, to human beings, just as complex and wondrous as any other. It's not to say a movie hasn't done this before, but Little Big Man delves so deep into the subject that it's definitely worth a mention.

Dustin Hoffman certainly carries the weight on his shoulders by having to mature as both an actor and a character, absorbing the events that have affected the character of 'Little Big Man' and applying the effect they've had in the scenes to come. He pulls this off well, and makes the viewer feel like they know this character, and why he makes the decisions he does, to the point that you expect certain things out of him, and almost feel betrayed when he makes the hard decisions that need to be made.

The action is fairly epic-scale for its time, though it certainly meets expectations rather than surpassing them. What makes these scenes unique, however, is how appropriate they are for the events unfolding. Quite often nowadays, and even in the 70s when the movie was made, a viewer can find the action in certain films rather forced, shoe-horned into the story just for a reason to do an action scene. Even for its length, Little Big Man avoids unnecessary action sequences when it can.

In conclusion, Little Big Man is a movie fan's recommendation, due to its length, subject matter, and tempo, casual movie viewers need not apply. For anyone looking for a life-story done well, however, Little Big Man is a must watch.

An epic film that could have been 3 hours long and wouldn't seemed long. A weird sense of humor, but it works. So much fun and different that I see it immensely rewatchable.

A top film, spanning many themes and stories. The director carefully balances humour and drama, and does so well. Really worth a look.

We got our 5 movies from blockbuster in the mail by Friday and that ment that we had a slew of things to watch this weekend. We managed to get through 4 of the 5 in addition to everything else that we did this weekend.

Here's a run down of some of the movies.

Little Big Man
The story of a 121 year old man, as told by himself to a reporter....This movie is funny in a not directly funny way. It wasn't that it told a joke and you laughed at it, it was that by it's nature it was inherantly funny. The way that they would jump from stage to stage of the movie with the..."That was the end of my gunfighter stage and a beginning to my soldiering days." A young man who inadvertantly lived a very full life of extraordinary proportions in the days of the wild wild west. And honestly, one of my favorite Dustin Hoffman movies.
