7 Oscar nominations, should have had more votes for Best Picture but came home with a paultry few for, uh, costuming!

"As a 'dwarf', Toulouse-Lautrec believes he's too ungly to ever fall in love. So he loses himself in painting...and cognac. A fixture at Paris' infamous turn of the century Moulin Rouge nightclub, Lautrec meets a girl from the street... who then breaks his heart (and vice versa). Luckily, newfound artistic success , copious amounts of drink (cognac), and frindship with a new woman keep him alive." --- dvd jacket of Moulin Rouge (1952)

Overlooked gem by director John Huston, with Jose Ferrar memborable as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the famous 19th century Parisian artist whose growth was stunted by a childhood accident.

Lavish photography and Oscar winning art direction and costumes make this a feast for the eyes.

A most touching portrait of a wonderful artist that just happened to love the nightlife... and the booze. He was fortunate to have two women like him, even love him. His fame worked to his favor by bringing him into Paris's elite society. But the sensitivity of this artist caused him to drink excessively.

The cinematography of the film was first rate, taken mostly indoors, but Jose Ferrar was the star of this movie, made it fly, no doubt. First Cyrano, with the long nose, then this... Moulin Rouge, he being a cripple with bad legs. What is it with Ferrar that he picks, or is given, bizarre roles of physical afflictions? Anyway, first rate performances all around.

On the whole, a sentimental, moving portrait of an artist on the rise in Parisian society. Worth watching more than once, as most of you may agree. You might need subtitles to keep up with the dialog, however, as there is some French accents thrown in, thankfully not from Ferrar however.

Moulin Rouge, one of John Huston's finest films in my opinion, and one of your most memorable I would hope.

An entertaining film, if overlong. Worth a look.

Nicole Kidman is stunning and should have won an oscar for her role. The chemistry between Nicole and Ewan Mcgregor is definitely there. The costumes and sets are a sight for the eyes and the music is genius, blending modern music to create original songs.

In "Moulin Rouge"(1952, no relation to the awful 2001 movie of the same title), Jose Ferrer stars as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a diminutive painter who was crippled by a childhood accident. He lived in Paris towards the end of the 19th century and captured life going on around him. It is an awesome looking movie and Jose Ferrer is fine in a double role(and Zsa Zsa Gabor is the life of the party) but the movie spends more time on a couple of forgettable romantic subplots, than on Toulouse-Latrec's painting or that much time in the title establishment at all.
