A truly touching and inspirational film. It is flawed in places and has a few plotholes but the strong cast and emotional hold this film bears makes it a must see. Along with the leading women Jenkins and harrellson give stand out performances. Overall a well made film.

To be honest, despite the respect I have for the critics of today, who have received this film icily, I really enjoyed it.

North Country is emotionally exhausting, but well worth the watch.

An inspiring story about the strength of one woman's fight for equal rights in a man's world, whilst she is carrying her own crippling secret.
The cast in this film is are absolutely perfect, and I honestly couldn't fault them. There is obviously a slight reek of predictability, as one does not tell a story such as this without a victor at the end. However, watching Josie's (played by Charlize Theron) fight to the top is a powerful spectacle and will make you feel all matter of different emotions, from anger to laughter.

There were points within this film where I was moved to tears, and points where I gritted my teeth in anger. It is not a hard film to critique, because the formula, whilst common, does make for powerful film making. I do not see how the story could have been told any other way, and yet it is a story that should be seen.

Relatable on a simple level, this story explores the infection of ignorance and the weight of guilt that we are not always supposed to feel, but carry for the sake of dignity and peace. For better or worse, in order to set yourself free, it sometimes takes a little strength and a whole lot of guts coupled with the ability to face your weaknesses and your flaws.

I was especially impressed by the performance of Amber Heard, who plays Josie as a child. Her performance, whilst brief, is gut wrenching.

North Country, whilst no different from any other courtroom drama, is immensely powerful and definitely not something I would miss.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

WATCH IT IF YOU LIKED: A time to Kill, Erin Brockovich.
CHILDREN: No need for them to see this as the concept is way too adult, heavy sexual references and course language.

RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY: Nothing really here to cause offence, aside from the heavy sexual refs, which are absolutely essential to the stories plotline.

This is a great drama that demonstrates the struggles that women had to undergo when working in male-dominated work places - and the main focus is on sexual harrassment - Great acting here, worth a look...

*** (out of four)

Well acted and well meaning drama that at times sinks below its good intentions.

Charlize Theron is very good as a woman who moves back to her Minnesota town. Needing some money she gets a job working at the local iron mine where she is constantly harassed by the men.

Decent enough, but other than Theron, many of the roles, especially the male charatcters are cliched stereotypes, and the melodrama gets pretty thick with the poorly execited climax.

"It can get to be a bit too much at points, but the story as a whole is truly inspiring and the acting is something to look for."

Before I review these two films, I will say that I wanted to do full length reviews for both of these films because they are both good but I am getting behind in reviews I need to do soon. These two I watched about two weeks ago and my memory is a little fuzzy on both but I'll my opinion on both.

North Country is a movie about a group of women miners who face sexual harassment in their work place with nothing more than their will to live and their courage.

First of all, I want to praise Charlize Theron's performance in this film. Although she doesn't look like a mother, she certainly acts like one. Theron's acting captured a mother's love for her children and a woman's despair in an uncomfortable environment. Kudos!

The film has a very strong message. What makes the movie watchable is that the argument in debate is strongly explained through the outstanding performances of Theron's costars.

Final say? North Country delivers a very strong message, and the plight of the women affected are heard by the viewers through the effective acting of the actors. It is an outstanding film that will leave viewers emotionally satisfied. Definitely, in this movie, viewers will be rooting for the protagonists!
