It's a very entertaining movie. They don't really make movies like this anymore. A note to hollywood: if your going to make romantic comedies add a little action into it like this movie did.

*** (out of four)

This is an example of how a romantic/adventure should be like. It's light and fun and Douglas and Turner have great chemistry. She is a writer who rushes off to South America when her sister is kidnapped. Douglas leads her into the jungle.

It's entertaining fluff. A little dated, but it's a fun movie. On side note the Blu-Ray transfer is pretty damn good.

It is such a great movie, and while it doesn't reach other adventure movies like Robin Hood and Indiana Jones, it is very action-packed and is cabable in my mind of being a mild classic

I always liked this movie, but now I really appreciate it too.

Romancing The Stone is Robert Zemeckis's movie about a romance novelist (Kathleen Turner) who has to go to Columbia to exchange a map for the life of her kidnapped sister. She's a hopeless romantic, but has never really done anything exciting before, and when she finds herself in over her head, she's lucky to discover a guide in the form of cynical Jack Colton (Michael Douglas), a rugged adventurer. Jack convinces her to discover what's at the end of the map, he says, as a bargaining chip to getting her sister back, and takes her on a wild adventure to do so. Along the way, they fall in love, or so Joan (Turner) hopes, because he very easily could be trying to romance the treasure from the map out from under her. Has she found true love and adventure? Or is she being used? (That's the point of watching the film.)

When I was a kid, I really liked this movie. But now I really love this movie. I started watching Romancing The Stone again because I wanted to structure the second act of a screenplay I'm writing after the love story in Romancing The Stone, so in doing that, I had to break the story of Romancing The Stone so I could take it. And in doing that, I realized that Romancing the Stone is probably one of the best written genre films I've ever seen. There are no extraneous scenes - every moment of the film has meaning, and ties together with other scenes later. It moves at a decent clip. From an execution standpoint, the acting is so good and matches the great direction so well that it comes out flawlessly. It does everything it's supposed to - the romance works, the action works; the humor works. It's a remarkably well-executed film on every level. I was literally blown away watching it this time out (and I haven't seen it since the eighties).

And it obviously gives me another occasion to talk about Robert Zemeckis. I don't remember if I ever pointed this out before, but the only student film I've ever seen and liked was Robert Zemeckis's. I thought I was the only one, but I was watching a DVD series on filmmaking, and the teacher (Dov S-S Simens) said the exact same thing. Likewise, as I went on and on to my best friend about how flawless the screenplay for Romancing the Stone was, I looked it up, and found that there is an instructional video on writing a screenplay that uses Romancing The Stone as a template - there's a reason why Diane Thomas has a screenwriting award named for her. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Robert Zemeckis makes good films. He is the best of Spielberg's proteges, and when it comes to "stupid American" movies, nobody does them better. Whlie Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorcese and the like are "world class" filmmakers, nobody does the pure American movie like Robert Zemeckis. All of his movies that I've seen are good, his student film was good, he has an Academy Award - if you're looking for that kind of movie, fuck Rob Reiner and Ron Howard. They try way too hard and don't go outside their comfort zone at all. (And have made plenty of shit films.) Robert Zemeckis is the standard, and Romancing The Stone just proves it.

Simply:
My favourite Kathleen Turner film I've seen so far, she and Douglas are both fantastic. This is like a Mr and Mrs Smith turned down a notch, and with a bit more brains. Loved it.
