(***): Thumbs Up

This is one of those small little surprises that comes around every once in awhile. A smart film with good direction. Definitely worth a look.

This movie is a total gem among horror movies. I really didn't know what to expect when I bought it from the cheep ben at our local rental place, but I can never pass up a horror movie. At first I was wary, as the cinematography isn't the keenest, and the acting is a little forced, but by the end of it I was thrilled to have picked this movie up. Though I didn't find it scary, I did find it particularly amusing with its sadistic moments of torture, and the slow realization of the child anti-hero that his Satanic idol is exactly that: Satanic. What is initially fun for the child becomes a nightmare when the people he loves become the victims of his would-be-hero. I certainly don't agree with the idea that video games can cause this sort of mayhem, but I can overlook that little hiccup just because of how fun and ultimately horrifying this film is.

Worst movie I have ever seen. The little kid in the film is a dumb ass you want to die every chance you see him, which is the whole movie. The characters were ridiculously retarded and the main killer is a boring, perverted jack ass. You just want everyone to die because of how dumb they all are. Just a terrible, terrible movie. Avoid it at all costs.

I don't know if the intentions of HDNet Movies was to scare us Halloween night in the primetime spot, but this movie was bloody awful. It had me interested for about 5 minutes, but the ending was so cringingly awful that my mom and I just sat there for a minute or two going, "What in the hell did we just watch?" Avoid this like the plague.

Satan's Little Helper
Starring: Alexander Bricknell, Amanda Plummer, Kathryn Winnick, Stephen Graham, and Joshua Annex
Director: Jeff Lieberman

A masked killer goes on a Halloween killing spree, assisted by Dougie (Bricknell), a young boy who is wholly unable to tell reality from his favorite computer game.

This film is graced with actors far better than it deserves, as it probably features one of the weakest scripts I've had the displeasure of seeing in a long time. If it wasn't because EVERY character in the film suffers from Stupid Character Syndrom (they do brainless things, because if they didn't, the story would be over).

And the character of Dougie... jeeze, it's clear that he's got overly permisssive parents who don't really do any parenting, but that kid's inability to distingush between reality and fantasy is so over the top that it's either awful writing or the character is supposed to be some sort of high-functioning retard. (And since one of the things the script does an okay job at is serve up enough expository dialogue to let us know who/what the characters are, and it doesn't do that with Dougie, he must simply be the worst written child character to ever appear in a horror film. (Oh, and if it wasn't because I'd feel bad picking on a kid, I'd talk about Bricknell's acting. Suffice it to say, he is the only performer that this movie deserved.)

"Satan's Little Helper" may be good for background static at a Halloween party, but it's not worth sitting down to watch.

Satan's Little Helper was actually an OK movie. It's sick and twisted and has a morbid sense of humor that lurks just under the surface of the movie. The budget for the film you can tell was low but the director takes what he has and makes the best of it.

Satan's Little Helper actually has an original plot. A little nine-year old boy named Douglas "Dougie" Whooly (Alexander Brickel) runs into a serial killer that is dressed up like a "character" in his favorite video game, Satans Little Helper. Dougie will do anything to help his virtual hero and soon is acting as his assistant in the murder of his own family.

Amanda Plummer plays Dougie's mother. She puts in a decent performance. The others in the film are basically unknowns. I did find myself wanting to smack Dougie though out the whole movie. He's so naive in this movie it drove me nuts. To think that your "hero" (which is nuts that Satan is a hero) is cool cause he kills people. And then to find him in real life and think that everything your doing is a joke? Come on now.

This wasn't a great movie, but it was good for what it was intended to be, a quirky comical/ B-Horror movie. If your a fan of a B-Horror then you may want to check this one out.

Tonight's movie is the remake of The Fog.
