I hated this movie. A 3-hour slice of LA life I would rather not have experienced. Pointless nudity. Hateful characters. Demeaning stories.

554. Great performances by a massive all-star cast, perhaps Altman's best since Nashville. The stories run the gamut of interpersonal struggles between friends, family, acquaintances, and strangers. While the movie presents some unsettling and grim scenarios, it deals with them honestly and delivers a memorable and satisfying experience. Recommended for fans of large ensemble movies or Altman films.

This expansive ensemble piece ties in many great acting performances into each other much better than it ties it's own themes together.

You are introduced to about 14 different characters within the opening credits , it's a lot to keep up with - but it's a really enjoyable balancing act. So many great actors in one film , it's an impressive feat of it's own - and there are moments of brilliant writing throughout.

However even at three hours long , the ending hits you out of nowhere - there's so much left open and you realize Short Cuts isn't supremely put together when you arrive at it's conclusion. Even if it is inferior to others of the type , it's still very entertaining because of it's realistic acting and massive amount of characters.

So what is the point of the movie , what questions does it ask ? Unlike other giant films that thread multiple narratives together , it doesn't have any huge underlying themes - rather it is simply a enormous character driven story.

i thought the movie wasn't faithful to the book.
the glitter and the colours took away the subtelties from raymond carver's writting..it was probably interesting at the time to see the stories connected to each other, but i think it made it harder to really get absorbed in the little details than if they would have been told one by one.
the movie wasn't terrible, but certainly not great. Some actors did a really good job and really incarnated carver's characters, but sometimes the bad acting ruined the ambiance that already had trouble building itself.

Short Cuts take's its time building your relationship with the characters. Then, almost cynically, it cleverly changes and re-changes your opinions. An excellent film!

a wonderful depiction of American life in the 90s with great turns from Jennifer Jason Leigh, Julianne Moore, Robert Downey Jr., Lily Tomlin and Andie McDowell. The whole cast is legendary and perfect while the script is superb and Altman's direction is distinct and beautiful.

Not really what I was expecting. I mainly watched Short Cuts because I heard it was a huge influence on P.T. Anderson's Magnolia, which is probably one of my ten favorite movies. I can definitely see how Anderson was influenced - both take place over a short period of time in Los Angeles, involve many seriously flawed characters, and have a huge out-of-left-field surprise that hits all the characters at the end. But where Magnolia is more of an intense but hopeful drama, Short Cuts is more of a cynical black comedy. Some of the stories do have emotional weight to them, but more often than not we are supposed to laugh at these people and all the weird, fucked-up things they do. Because of this, Short Cuts is rarely emotionally engaging or likeable in any way, but it's still fascinating as hell. The characters weave together in clever, unexpected, often shocking ways, and the fact that Altman managed to keep Short Cuts from splintering into complete chaos is incredibly impressive. With all these unique, funny, often creepy stories unfolding beautifully, the 3-hour running time goes by pretty quickly, to the point where I actually wanted a little bit more.

Short Cuts is sometimes a bit overwhelming and often unsettlingly dark, but it ended up being a wonderfully unusual, thought-provoking film that was worth the effort to watch. Besides, look at that cast!

A 3 hour and 9 minute film, that still needed more.

Robert Altman's mosaic masterpiece, based on Raymond Carver's short stories, presents several different characters -- including a baker, a chauffeur, a helicopter pilot, a phone-sex provider, a pool cleaner and a jazz singer -- whose stale lives intersect and are forever altered through simple twists of fate. This moving tale's all-star cast includes Tim Robbins, Madeleine Stowe, Bruce Davison, Andie MacDowell, Jack Lemmon and Anne Archer.

The movie traces the actions of twenty-two principal characters, both in parallel and at occasional loose points of connection. The role of chance and luck is central to the film, and many of the stories concern death and infidelity.

Much of the stories are told about people who just have very strange but overall upsetting lives, and barely get through it day to day. A lot of these stories blend a great deal of humor and mix it with the depressing tone, but keep you interested due to this sharp skills.

Most of the credit of this film has to go to the amazing director Robert Altman, who really does show he can make some great film's. He takes this three hour long story and still make it fresh and barely ever drag on. Altman really does have a love for many of these stories, and a lot of these strange characters and that comes out from his very impressive direction. He goes through each story like a 3 hour soap opera but never misses a beat in combining some strange moments and add a little flavor of realism.

As great as this film can be it did have a lot of problems that could've saved this film. With so many stories and a very long run time like this, you would think this movie would be a central message for some sort of idea. No, and if there was I didn't catch it. I found the film's stories to be powerful and mostly engaging but by the end of the film we don't really see much resolved, and we don't see what the main purpose of this film was, other than just a bunch of stories that end suddenly.

Many stories in this film are actually more interesting than others, and although I stated before didn't drag too much, the less interesting ones were given the most attention. I think that Altman goes from one story to another but not a very notable way, because sometimes the stories are barely or at all connected.

The huge ensemble-cast is just simply amazing. There are a lot of big names in this film that show up, but actually do add something to this film, that is deserved. I can't name notable one other than two that stand out in my mind. Tim Robbins plays a cop in this film an creates one of the most hated, self-conscience characters I have ever seen on film, and creates a perfect character. Also Julianne Moore has some good scenes although she is barely on and by the end of the film you soon start to know that she is destined for greatness.

Consensus: Some stories are more interesting than others, Short Cuts features some impressive directing, amazingly-acted ensemble, and some great stories to be told. The only problem is that an engaging film needs to have an engaging message, which this does not have.

8/10=Matinee!!

Raymond Carver short stories and poetry of the motif. Robert Altman directed it. Spread by human comedy big colorful cast. 3-hour epic. 22 characters. Novels like "sin-semillas.com" and the movie "Magnolia" is like. No, rather than the past? Have an impact on the drama rather than a lot of sculptured group drama Altman.

The first 30 minutes, some of the most character. I'm not sure which is connected with other families. My head hurts. "GOSFORD PARK" I felt like it. Everyone will know the relationship over time. Several families living in the city not so big too. Seem to be connected in some people.

To have exquisite timing between consecutive scenes. Someone you open the door, the scene has changed in the family. During the time he was two minutes ago, another family is a serious matter. The episode not related to each other at all, it looks as if it is related.

This perspective is very interesting!. Consciousness while at the same time a number of developments, in a survey that looked at the other. The only common time axis. Almost forgotten. And clear, but in the last earthquake.

Each of their lives, just visible in the world to me. Without knowing their neighbors and so on are involved in subtle. All have been notified only seen this side. It is God's perspective. The vast amount of information about our many characters, I feel that getting. This is a work of great satisfaction in just looking.
