Though only 3 films, this is the beginning of my favorite superhero franchise. The first two were so good that I forgave the third a bit. The first, started it all.

We all know his name. Tobey Maguire. He is this film. He provides the heart and soul that is Spiderman. He is my third favorite movie character behind Harry Potter and Aragorn, and it is all thanks to Maguire's amazing acting and performance. An actor was needed that not only play the nerd that is Peter Parker and the superhero that is Spiderman, but someone who could play the transition as well. Maguire was the right choice.

The rest of cast does just fine as well. I especially loved J.K Simmons and Willem Dafoe as Jonah Jameson and The Green Goblin/Norman Osborn respectively.

The plot was also very good. The realism of the story was just amazing. It's not like other films where it shoves into a world of superheroes and villains. This film gradually and over time makes a villain and an enemy. This is something Spiderman and Spiderman 2 did great with.

The characters were also very deep. I felt in one with Peter as I did with Norman. Both of their struggles were as clear as could be. As unusual as they were, they felt realistic.

The action scenes were very well drawn out. Instead of having that giant scene like at the end of Spiderman 3, it was just between the two of them in a beat out, underground shack where Green Goblin got killed. It was very exhilarating.

The ending was the best, and one of my favorite film endings. It had a lot of heart and was very deep, something that is not seen in superhero films often.

This will always be one of my favorites. I really do not see how the reboot can beat this.

Comic and film are two very seperate mediums of storytelling. However, filmmakers have always put strip to screen. Sometimes it works, others, well, Tank Girl, need I say more? Comic book films need two things to be successful, a great cast, and a visionary director.
Tobey Mcguire nails the socially inept Peter Parker, and the action hero web slinger perfectly. Kirstn Dunst, James Franko, Willem Dafoe, and Rosemary Harris are excellent as their respective charecters. However, I beating around the bush because JK Simmons plays J. Jonah Jameson as though he were born to play the role. You know what, that does not do him justice, JK is JJ.He is the man we always imagined the grouchy publisher to be. And as though that wasn't enough, the chin makes an appearance, what else do you want.
Nolan was perfect for Batman because he had a dark, noiry style and Batman is a detective. Spidey is not a detective, he's a super hero. Raimi delivers the perfect stylish flair. The edits are quick and good looking. Elfman's score is pitch perfect as well.
I can't imagine anyone else directing this series, or playing Peter Parker. SPider Man 4 will be worse than Spidey 3, mark my words.
Roger Ebert pointed out the flukey physics in his review. It's true, Spidey does appear to fly and, more importantly, land as though he weighed nothing. Gravity is a bitch, but in this film, Spidey makes gravity his bitch. This doesn't take anything away from the film. We must remember that a high school student was bitten by a genetically engineered spider and trensformed into a man who can do anything a spider can. The physics, I am told, are improved in the sequel, which I will watch and review later today.

A quite good comic book film, this does just a few things wrong, but still manages to do justice to arguably the most famous superhero ever created. The one major flaw of the film is the casting of Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane. The emotional weight and tension come all but exclusively from Tobey Maguire, who, unlike Dunst, does an outstanding job of playing his character. The special FX are excellent, and plot carries along nicely, and never overstays its welcome.
