A wonderful, gloomy study of three men wanting something completely different from each other, and none of them really knowing exactly what they want anyway. Sad, mystical and eerie.

Your college film professor says that Tarkovsky is a master of atmosphere. Your favorite film critic says that Tarkovsky creates allegory through film. Both are wrong. It's true that Tarkovsky is a great story-teller, but he's a horrible director. He treats the medium of film like film is a painter's canvas (which is a bad thing) There are long, static shots that numb the viewer's mind into believing he's watching something artistic. There are long stretches of time where nothing happens at all followed by tedious and pretentious exposition. There are hackneyed iamges, such as mirrors, dripping water, etc. And finally, there are a lot of bored people in the audience wondering why they're too stupid to see the value of it all.

The atmosphere is well made, but that seemed the only interesting thing in this film. The story is just too philosophical for my taste and you end up watching pretty same pictures for more than 2 hours.

An incredible film. Both haunting and utterly human, I can only imagine how many brilliant filmmakers were inspired by this awesome achievement.

This is one full on film, but nonetheless, a masterpiece. It was my first Tarkovsky and I was blown away at the amazing imagery and haunting score. Though slow in some spots, heavy on metaphor and symbolism, this is where great filmmakers like David Lynch and Michael Haneke have gotten their inspiration. Many people complain and whine about the pace and such, but if you persevere and stick through it til the end, you'll be rewarded. A masterpiece.

I dare you to watch...this amazing science fiction if you will, masterpiece. I had mixed expectations, as I think most people will have before watching this film without any prior knowledge of this film. But the least I can tell you, is that you will not come away unaffected. An existential experience of the rarest kind, this is something you will only see here in this film. A must see...
