I felt Vincent D'onofrio's performance as Abby Hoffman was memorable as was that of the rest of the cast.

Independent films should not be viewed in the same way that films from the big studios are viewed. Films that have money thrown at them may have a more polished look but, lack the heart and guts of their poorer cousins.

Steal This Movie was a heartfelt portrayal of Abby Hoffman and the times he lived in and was well worth watching.

Steal This Movie is based on the life story of one of the sixties most influential counter culture icons, Abbie Hoffman. The film, directed by Robert Greenwald, follows Hoffman's (Vincent D'Onofrio) evolution from civil rights worker, to his radical involvement in the Anti-War movement and finally his years underground fleeing the FBI as Barry Freed. Janeane Garofalo plays his wife Anita, while Jeanne Tripplehorn plays Barry's love interest Johanna Lawrenson. Undoubtedly Abbie Hoffman was a fascinating character, one worthy enough for a feature film, however Steal This Movie cannot do the subject matter justice. The first problem is the uneven script. The second problem is an apparent lack of budget. Some of the scenes from the sixties seem so contrived and unauthentic that you seriously hope the small budget is to blame. Lastly Vincent D'Onofrio is not at all convincing as Hoffman, especially in his earlier years. I watched this movie constantly wondering how it would have turned out in the hands of Oliver Stone instead of Mr. Greenwald.

Steal This Movie

This one wasn't too bad. A lot better than I expected since it had that useless blowhard Giraffejello or whatever her name is. While it is far from a good movie it is tolerable. I would take the advice of the title and steal it if I were you. There is a lot of liberal preaching that you might expect from a biopic about ultra leftist Abbie Hoffman.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Yes I am a fan of the books. Or at least the 3rd book and onward until the 6th book where JK fell off the wagon. GOF is my favorite book of the series and in literary form it is a masterpiece typically film did what it always does to any book. It butchered the shit out of it taking out all the wonder, heart, and character development and substituting special f/x that never are as amazing as the image in your head. It is woefully inadequate as an adaptation. Almost everything that made the book great was cut and where the film added things that weren't in the book it felt awkward and unnecessary. The acting is as bad as usual with little improvement. The good actors like Rickman get little to no time and all the new actors introduced are lacking. It felt like a movie made by a student that wrote the paper the night before it was due. Poorly organized, thought out, and executed.

The Godfather

A "friend" of mine finally got me to watch this POS again. I had watched it before of course and found it sorely lacking. Still see it that way. For the life of me I can't understand how people like this movie. What is it that makes it good? The acting sucks! Yes it sucks! Brando does nothing impressive although I guess I could be wrong since I couldn't understand the lardass half the time. He made more sense as the fat phantom Dr.Moreau. Pacino is stoic and seems to me that he is constipated through most of the picture. The only great performance is Caan as Sonny. He brings every scene he is in to life so naturally he is killed for daring to be a human being. Every scene is drug out for too long. Everyone is too somber and serious. Even the score grates on my nerves. So many better mob movies. Watch Goodfellas. That is a movie with style and fire.

Salton Sea

This is the best movie you've probably never seen. Val Kilmer at his best with Vincent D'onofrio doing a damn great job as "Pooh Bear" as psycho drug dealer that snorted his nose off literally. This gem of a movie follows Kilmer as he travels through the drug world as a police informant. But there is much more to this story than a typical drug rat with a conscience. It is a movie about revenge. Who Kilmer is trying to attack and just how far he is willing to go you'll just have to see to believe. I promise you that if you check it out you'll love it.
