81/100. Gary Busey's performance certainly contributes a lot to the success to this film. The music of Buddy Holly is given loving tribute, and such superb and groundbreaking music it is. The film has a nice flair for the period detail of the time, it's evident an effort was made. Good sound and art direction, superb score. Charlie Martin Smith is great as one of the Crickets.

Despite a TV movie feel and a reviewer's quote (with no story link that worked for me) that the story was "80% fiction", the film still featured a surprising performance by Busey and did the job of displaying the clash between the overwhelming moral objection to rock and roll and the people who enjoyed it, despite bigoted fear that it was "nigger music" in an indoctrinated society of entrenched racism.

Musical performance sequences abound and provide the central entertainment.

Gary Busey did a good job playing Buddy Holly. The movie would have been mediocre otherwise.

(****):

Before Ray or Walk the Line, there was this film. Gary Busey rightfully deserved his Oscar nomination in this very entertaining and well-made bio-pic.

The slightly fictionalized life story of rock legend Buddy Holly, who died at 29 in a plane crash. There are moments when this nearly turns into a made-for-TV biopic-of-the-week, but Gary Busey's performance and the excellent live performances (coupled with a superb soundtrack) keep it afloat.
