Let me preface this by saying, I am a big fan of zombie movies. When done right, they can be one of the most entertaining genres. But when done wrong, they can be very preposterous, boring, and trite. Unfortunately, The Crazies is the latter.

So...Sherriff David Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) has to confront a town drunk who interrupts a varsity baseball game by walking on the field armed with a shotgun. The sheriff has to open fire and kill the drunk when he won't drop his weapon. After the autopsy reveals he had no alcohol in his system, the sheriff starts to figure out that there is something strange happening in Ogden Marsh, Iowa. Especially after his wife Judy (Radha Mitchell) starts to treat her patients with similar zombie symptoms. Well I won't tell you what started the plague since it's such a huge "surprise", but I will tell you that the military intervenes to try and eliminate everyone that has been exposed and infected by the "crazies". This puts the sheriff, his wife, his deputy (Joe Anderson), and a token teenager on the run across the plains of the Midwest from the undead and the military. Wonder what will happen on their journey? Not much that is very amusing, that's for sure. The government occupation of the town was a really overused and unnecessary subplot device, and the zombie encounters just aren't that fun.

The secret to a good zombie movie isn't the setup, but it's in the delivery. That's where The Crazies goes wrong. Too many tired horror movie tricks. Too many "You wait here while I go check out this ominous looking empty dark barn." Why is almost every confrontation with the zombies' one on one or two on one? Isn't it much better when there are hordes of zombies attacking a small group? Breck Eisner seems like he is a good enough filmmaker, but too bad he makes movies like this and Sahara. My recommendation: Rent George Romero's original version of The Crazies or take a rollercoaster comedy ride with the much better Zombieland.

A well made but rather routing paranoid horror movie.

This movie is really good in a lot of ways. In the ways of suspense, moving a plot along, acting, and interest. The story is bad a in few ways. Unnecessary events, some of the characters. Alright. The suspense in the movie is great. There is a part in the hospital where people will get totally freaked out and start thinking,"what is going to happen? O_O." The plot moves along very well and the end is very ambiguous, which is something a I like. People do not get confused during the movie. The acting is great. You really start to get into the characters as the plot continues and the story develops. Some of the things that happen are a little ridiculous and a one of the main characters could have been left out. But overall, I would recommend seeing this movie.
