[from The Watermark, 1995/04/29)

The Cure is about a twelve-year-old (Brad Renfro) who lives with his frequently absent an occasionally abusive mother (un-ironically played by Mommie Dearest's Diana Scarwid). His new next door neighbors are another mother and son (Annabella Sciorra and Joseph Mazzello), but they differ in that Mazzello has AIDS which he contracted through a blood transfusion. Scarwid orders Renfro to "keep a safe distance" from the diseased child, so naturally, Renfro befriends Mazzello. As the two boys become close, Renfro decides he is going to find a cure for his dying pal. He overstuffs him with candy and boils him herbal tea from leaves found in the back yard, but to no avail. After reading a tabloid headline, Renfro even convinces Mazzello to embark on a raft ride down the Mississippi River to New Orleans where a doctor has reportedly found a cure for AIDS. Sciorra takes a liking to Renfro in spite of his overzealous interest in her son, and the film turns into a poignant story about a son in need of a maternal role model and a mother facing the possibility of losing her child before his time.

Directed by thirtysomething's Peter Horton, the film has a nice balance of plot and character. When we aren't excited by the boys zooming down the street in a shopping cart or riding the rapids of the Mississippi, we're touched by Sciorra planting a simple kiss on Renfro's head, or Mazzello talking about the vastness of the universe and how he fears he is being lost in it. The well-structured screenplay is held together by strong performances from the young talents of Renfro (The Client) and Mazzello (Jurassic Park). Renfro is adventurous, fearless, and mischievous in the way he manipulates Mazzello, yet we're always secure that he cares about his sick friend. The real treat in the film is Sciorra (The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) who is outstanding in her role as Mazzello's understanding mother. This is no clich

One of my all time favorite movies. The actors in it are my favorites from the 90's. Everytime I watch it I cry but, it is more than that. It is a movie about friendship and what really matters...Butterfingers and practical jokes...;) just kidding. I use it to make sure that I am giving all I can.

THE CURE: The film is about Dexter, a boy who's got AIDS with a blood transfusion, so he's turned down by other kids.
He has a young neighbor who one day discovers how wonderful was Dexter and they make an unbreakable friendship. He isn't afraid of getting infected by AIDS, because it is an illness that doesn't pass just for touching the others, but his mother doesn't agree with this.
He doesn't want to lose him, so he decides to search for AIDS' cure going with a man who told he's got it.

During the movie you get real conscience about unconditional friendship and that circumstances doesn't matter when you love. Never lose your hope.

I'm beginning the rather lengthy task of entering into the database every film I have seen, at least those I have a decent memory of. Some may have the briefest of reviews while many will just have a number. Those films that I consider personal favorites and/or those that have some historical signficance I will add later when I have time for more lengthy reviews.

I saw The Cure a long time ago when I was a young kid and I remember really enjoying it. I revisited The Cure today and although some of it was good, it definitely wasn't the same as I remembered. The basic story is that two boys become good friends, but one friend has aids (due to a bad blood transfusion at a hospital) and so they attempt to find a cure. Overall, The Cure isn't that bad, maybe a little outdated now, but still enjoyable.

Uninspiring rubbish, were it not for Ethan Hawke's great performance and Washington's Ok performance - this film would rated lower. Yes, Denzel W was only OK - he only one the Oscar to create history as we all know.

The Cure is a strange movie - it is nearly what it is trying to be, but just misses, which dissapoints MAJORLY.
