If you are a fan of English football, you will thoroughly enjoy this film. The story of Brian Clough's rise and fall is one of extraordinary proportions. The story itself is actually more entertaining than the movie portrayed, but Sheen does a great job of bringing to life early 70's football.

Also, the stock footage of Liverpool and Kevin Keegan during the Shankly years, definitely don't hurt.

(*** 1/2): Thumbs Up

Michael Sheen gives a great performance here. Well-worth seeking out. One of 2009's better films.

This was a brilliantly written and conceived film that kept a steady heartbeat despite it's slower pace. The Damned United had just enough soccer in it to be considered a sports movie, but it was surprisingly one of the better character studies of 2009, and it was probably the year's best bromance as well. Michael Sheen is suddenly one of the better actors out there, and one of the more bankable as far as the overall quality of the projects he attaches himself to (particularly when he works with Peter Morgan). His natural charm and charisma were perfect for the role of Brian Clough.

I'm not a fan of football, not at all. But this movie was brilliant. I'm already a big fan of Micheal Sheen after some great performance (Frost/Nixon, The Queen) and in this, he definitely didn't disappoint.

There was something about this films direction and certain shots that just looked amazing. It kept the period feel of the late 60s and 70s brilliantly, it really put you there.

Great performances, great directing and a very enjoyable movie. Thumbs up also to Timothy Spall.

A sports movie that rarely gets on the field, The Damned United is more of a character study about controversial football manger Brian Clough and his unrestrained ego.

It's a violation of most sports movie cliches and for that it's extremely refreshing. But something about it was ultimately underwhelming. I would have liked to see more sports action mixed in, for example. However, it's tough to complain about TDU much and it's a great watch for anyone who has ever coached, played or followed professional sports.
