The Interpreter is about a UN interpreter Silvia Broome who over hears a quiet conversation not meant to be heard. When she informed the FBI she becomes a suspect for the assassination of a foreign leader, by not only the US and but others as well.

This film is well written, yet kind of over written. The suspense seems to drag along to the beat of a turtle, but with all this extra time filled with back story it still makes it hard to connect with the characters. I expected more from Sydney Pollack who directed and produced so many great movies like Micheal Clayton, The Reader, and Out of Africa. I wouldn't blame it on the actors either both of the leads Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn were well done and had a great for a couple scenes. Nicole, who I may be biased towards looked amazing as always and was very believable.

The story itself was the weak point, it was a little implausible and tiresome. Once and a while it would have some sweet or interesting parts but then it returned to its normal pace. I feel they could have cut out a few parts and sped it up to keep my attention better.

Overall I liked this film but it could have been much better. If you enjoy Sean and Nicole this is a barely decent film otherwise pass.

The movie was suspenseful but not to the level you would want it to be. The ending was a little obvious. Nicole Kidman was great in the film, but Sean Penn was not that good. Probably not a best in his career. But the movie is nice to watch and doesn't leave you too bored. Just don't expect a huge ending.

While on paper an intriguing idea for a thriller (an evil dictator being targeted for assassination), this movie never quite becomes what it could have been. The dialogue is stilted at times, and the action isn't really interesting either. This is a shame because I admire Kidman's work, and she tries her hardest to elevate the material, which is strangely flat. Also, Penn seems a strange choice for his character, and gives one of his worst performances as a result.
