Bogart's filmography may not be as extensive as other actors, but he manages to make every film he becomes apart of a instant classic. That and combined with John Huston, and you have the formula for several great movies. Sierra Madre is an exciting western adventure as three bums scrounging around the streets of Tampico take to the hills to strike it rich in the unforgiving Sierra Madre mountains. They fight off bandits, the terrain, but more than anything: themselves. The movie becomes more intense as their wealth increases. For what is apparently just a classic adventure film has many underlying themes hidden under its skin. This movie truly examines the morality of humans and how greed can destroy us. Definitely a must-see.

Bogart is great! Almost better than Casablanca.

The story of how gold can make a good person paranoid, greedy and atavistic. Walter Huston, the father of John Huston, is great as the wise old prospector.

This is not my favorite type of tale, because you predict the ending coming before you get there. That being said this is a wonderfully written, beautifully directed and well acted classic.

Bogart is especially fun to watch the first half hour of this film as he tries to scrounge a living as an American in Tampico Mexico and decides to go searching for gold.

Incredibly shot entirely on location in Mexico, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre shows the incredible film team of Humphrey Bogart and director John Huston. The film's outstanding performances from Bogart, in a griping, psychotic role, and Walter Huston as the definitive, grizzled prospector, leave a lasting impression on you.

I've given a few Humphrey Bogart films a shot. I've seen The Caine Mutiny, Casablanca, and the Maltese Falcon, among others. In each film, it is clear to my untrained eye that these are solid films, and that Bogart is immensely talented. But I did not see the wondrous final product that I had heard so much about. The one Bogart film, however, that surpassed my expectations was The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

The film is directed by one of the best, John Huston, and stars his father, Walter Houston, as well as Tim Holt, and Bogart. The trio portray three wayward Americans, down on their luck in Mexico, who throw in together to search for gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Based on the novel of the same name by B.Traven, the story is about the evils of greed and the pursuit of material wealth, as opposed to obtaining happiness by doing what is right and good.

Sounds a bit hokey, right? Well, this film isn't hokey. It is dirty, gritty, tense, and tumultuous. It covers plenty of ground, figuratively and literally. The performances are outstanding. No. They are beyond that. They are astounding, especially Huston, who has several scenes that must be cataloged among the best in the history of film making. Specifically, I point you toward the fruit eating scene at the Indian Village, and the little jig he does over found gold, among others.

If you're like me, you'll find this film still relevant after all these years. And it will probably grow on you. It is a morality tale built on a great script, and incredible actors, all led by one of the most prolific directors ever. What more could you ask for, aside from perhaps some stinking badges?

this was a very good movie. it was very well made and the acting was phenomenal. the story is amazing too. two people who go out in search of the gold of the Sierra madre and they take along an old timer who knows all about the gold rush. I particularly liked the scene where the two men figure out that with Bogart's lucky lottery win they finally have enough money to go find the gold and they laugh and shake hands together and the old timer just looks at them with a look on his face that clearly says "here we go again". I also like the part where they have clearly deteriorated to the point where they would murder the fourth man to keep their gold. (and of course there is the ever famous "Badges" line). and of course there is the ending, the gold has blown away and the two surviving members of the gold team are laughing at the pure irony of the situation. brilliant just brilliant. i loved this movie and I feel that it totally felt that it deserved to win Best Picture over Hamlet.

A great study on greed and the dark origins of capitalism. Humphrey Bogart gives one of his legendary performances, and Walter Huston matches him in his Oscar-winning supporting role.

This movie could have been called "Greed" in my opinion. Brilliant visaulization that brought the novel to life. Set in the mexican revolution in the 1920's, three men decide to search for gold in the mountains. Successfully they find their treasure, but their minds start playing tricks on them and paranoya starts. Especially for Bogart who really shines as he is going crazy and paranoid. The big star of the movie though is Walter Houston, brilliantly directed by his son in this classic. At times you can't really tell if he is sane or not. And not to forget the classic line from this movie that has been used so many times in movies such as "Blazing Saddles": "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!". Time has not aged this movie, just made it more of a b/w classic.

Bogart does a great job at changing his act many times during the film. A remarkable film.
