Although this franchise has not tried to change the storyline or try anything new with it. I did enjoyed the style and visuals and of course the acting which was great. If only they bring to other direction. If they make a fourth installment it might might not be a fresh rating from me again.

A great backstory but need to change it up.

I watched this film last night.

It is the second sequel (ie film number three) to Underworld - which was the film that got the teens of the internet fermenting, because it was mostly Kate Beckinsale in a rubber catsuit jumping and shooting.

Although this isn't actually a sequel at all, it's a prequel - set hundreds of years ago when vampires used to use swords instead of machine guns. And giant crossbows for heavy artillery.

It didn't have Kate Beckinsale in it this time, but it did have Rhona Mitra instead - who I like although she is quite manny. She didn't wear a rubber catsuit either, but instead some kind of slinky skintight chainmail affair that made her look shimmery and lithe.

And was probably not much cop at keeping the werewolves off her.

Sorry, not werewovles. Lycans.

FFS.

In fact it totally failed to keep the werewo Lycans off her, because she was being furiously bummed left and right by Michael Sheen from Frost/Nixon, who played their leader. That's a bit of a spoiler, actually. But it doesn't matter - for reasons that will become apparent.

What Michael Sheen was doing in this I have no idea - perhaps the payment was due on his Bentley or something. He is a proper actor, playing David Frost or Brian Clough, in proper dramas.

He shouldn't really be running around in things like this, all sweaty hair extensions and feebly white bare chest.

Bill Nighy was in it as well. Poor old Bill.

They couldn't even get his vampire contact lenses lined up so both his eyes looked the same way. He didn't seem very threatening while he seemed to be trying to look over your left shoulder.

Anyway.

There was a bit of violence in this. And quite a lot of blood - although that might have just looked extra-evident because the whole of the rest of the film was in various shades of blue. Everything blue. Except the blood.

It was all doomy proclamations from self-important dullards and ferociously-edited fight scenes where you couldn't see a thing that was going on until suddenly there would be a slow-motion shot of somebody doing the splits upsidedown in mid-air.

This happened several times, so it might possibly have been written into Rhona Mitra's contract. Either that she should do air-splits, or that she should be close-by when somebody else does.

Plenty of gusset.

This film was rated 18, probably because of the violence although I can't be certain. I don't think it was as violent as it thought it was. I expect a lot more from an 18 - perhaps even some boobs. Not so in Rise Of The Lycans, sadly.

The biggest tragedy is that this film would be perfect for 13 year old boys to watch. If you'd been able to record my actual dreams when I was 13 - on those nights when I woke up in the morning with my hand idly down the front of my pyjamas - then you would have made this film. Vampires and werewolves fighting over a fit lady in sexy armour.

Exactly what 13 year-olds dream about.

Only, they're not allowed to see this film for five more years.

So who is it for?

I don't know. Not grown-ups, certainly.

There should be an even-more-adult film rating age. 22 perhaps. To differentiate between films for real grown-ups, and films for 13 year-olds who just have to wait before they can see them.

I don't even think there was any swearing in this, ffs.

As I was watching it I suspected it was in fact absolutely shit.

With hindsight, I'm right.

Verdict: How shit.

Score: shit/10 (points given for Rhona Mitra being topless, but then instantly taken back again because Brian Clough was standing in the way)

I have seen and quite enjoyed the previous two films in this series, Underworld (2003) and Underworld: Evolution (2006). So I was quite interested to see how the third instalment would turn out. This film is set before the previous two and tells how the war between the Vampires and the Lycans started.

The Vampires, led by Viktor, are aware of the Lycan race, immortal wolf-like creatures that are unable to change shape. That is until one day one of them is born in human form. Viktor knows he should kill it, but decides to let it live. They call him Lucian and they allow him to live among the Vampire race. Using his genetic material, Viktor breeds a race of Lycans that he uses to guard the Vampires as they sleep. He keeps them in check by force. Unknown to Viktor, Lucian and his daughter, Sonja have fallen in love and plan to leave the confines of the castle. Viktor finds out and this is where the fun really begins. I won't say any more, but it's not hard to figure out where the story goes from here.

Quite a well made film with some good effects, plenty of gore and some decent CGI. Some great over-acting from Bill Nighy as Viktor and very decent performances from both Michael Sheen as Lucian and Rhona Mitra as Sonja. If anything I felt the film relied a bit too heavily on the special effects at the expense of a decent script. I don't think this one will feature in my end of year awards and I can't really recommend it to you.

My score: 5.6/10
