Since I am a fan of werewolf movies, I was expecting Wolfen to be a pretty entertaining film. Unfortunately, it was quite the opposite. The story is actually really stupid, and is incredibly boring. Nothing really exciting happens till the end, and by that time, you just don't give a ****. Another thing that kind of pissed me off was the fact that the so called werewolves weren't actually werewolves, that were just large regular wolfs. I will say though that the acting was pretty good, and Albert Finney did a pretty good job. But overall, this is a forgettable horror film that isn't really worth watching in the first place.

Wolfen
Directed by: Michael Wadleigh

I've seen this film before, and it had gotten better on every viewing, but boy oh boy is the general consensus right that this film really does get better with every viewing.

I'm prepared to call it a masterpiece now. The depth of the characterization and the brilliance of the comedy really is amazing. Jeff Bridges performance as "The Dude" is really a masterwork, he creates the character so completely. Goodman as Walter isn't bad either. Truly one of the best films of the 90's.

In derelict New York strange murders take place. Albert Finney investigates and discovers a pack of supernatural wolves. Confusing movie that probably seemed impressive 25 years ago. It's incredibly dated - most of the characters are middle-aged men, reversal footage used for the wolves' viewpoint appears silly, stylish contrast between scenes, scruffy Finney (who looks like an extra), silly detective plot, and the fashion sense. All that's mossing is a scene set in a nightclub (complete with disco music from the era). You'll spend most of the picture wondering what exactly is going on. The best part of the movie was the unusual casting. Wolfen is dated but serious werewolf movie.

I thought since I had listed some favorite Vampire movies in honor of Underworld Evoultion release I would also add a list of werewolf movies as well. The more I thought about it there are some great werewolf movies out there too. So not to slack the wolf here are some of my favorite films. Not listed in any order except for the order they come to mind.

All I have to say is I couldn't list werewolf movies without listing this one. This is a great flick. It's scary, funny all rolled into one. Awesome effects, great editting, and the humorr, well this is just a classic. If you haven't watched it, well go rent it.

I'll list some more werewolf movies soon.

Since my Netfilx horror movies are finally trickling in, I'm just continuing the good times. Tonight I watched Wolfen, starring Albert Finney ("Big Fish"), Edward James Olmos ("Gossip") and the ever delightful Gregory Hines ("Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her").

Finney plays a slightly unstable New York City detective investigating the brutal slayings of a prominent businessman, his wife and bodyguard. The killings have several animal characteristics, but the investigators turn their focus to terrorist instead of terrorizing animals.

As Finney investigates the murders, the movie takes a turn from normal werewolf fare. After a hearing a comment from one of his Native American suspects, Finney begins to entertain the notion of shape shifters.

I won't go into any more plot details, but the script, based on the novel by Whitley Strieber of "The Hunger" fame, does give a fresh take on the material. Filmed in the early 80s, the film does have several 80s quirks that simultaneously amuse me and make me crazy. Example, excessive use of mirrors.

Starring: Albert Finney, Diane Venora, Edward James Olmos, Gregory Hines, and Tom Noonan.
Directed by Michael Wadleigh.
Written by David Eyre and Michael Wadleigh.
Rated R (for strong horror violence and gore, some sexuality/nudity and language).
Running time approximately 1 hour 54 minutes.

Michael Wadleigh's Wolfen is a brilliant and magnificent horror film. The performances are far too good for this material, yes, but in being too good, they have assisted in making the film unexpectedly fantastic. Wadleigh certainly knew what he was doing when he decided to take on a horror picture, delivering scares and suspense like one of the masters. Yes, the ending was a bit sloppy, but it's forgivable because the first 100 minutes are brilliant. And I don't care what anybody says, those wolves scared me to death! I'd rather see live wolves than some guy in a furry suit any day! This is horror done right, and I absolutely loved it. ***1/2 (out of ****) A-

After a brutal attack on a couple, a detective (played by Finney) is brought in to examine the case. He teams up with an annoying character played by Hines and some chick.
Yeah, those crazy 80's. There must have been tons of love for wolves back then, An American Werewolf in London, The Howling,...
Of course the creature that committed the attacks is a wolf, it's not a spoiler, although it's only hinted at halfway through the movie. But the movie's called Wolfen... so yeah, you kinda know what you're in for.
Some genuinely scary scenes (loved the part where the wolves showed up near the end) and Finney's a blast.
