The Pharaoh ( Faraon ) is a Polish peplum directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz , released in 1966 .
This carefully crafted drama, taken from the homonymous novel by Bolesław Prus published in 1897, has an ideological background. The communist power of the time, by financing the film, invited to see a metaphor of its own situation against the powerful Polish Catholic Church.
